SUBJECT: Recommendation to Appoint Joanne Pontrello to the Conservation
Futures Citizen Oversight Committee as a District 2 Citizen Representative
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Environmental Public Health management,Conservation Futures Citizen Oversight Committee(CF
Committee)Chair David Wilkinson and Member Rick Jahnke recommend that the BoCC appoint Joanne
Pontrello to serve a new 4-year term on the CF Committee as a District 2 Citizen Representative.
ANALYSIS/STRATEGIC GOALS/PRO'S and CON'S:
A vacancy for the District 2 seat on the CF Committee was advertised in the The Leader on April 4,2018.
Joanne Pontrello resides in District 2 and expressed interest in serving by the April 17 deadline. Ms.
Pontrello was the only applicant. CF Committee Chair David Wilkinson,Member Rick Jahnke and staff
interviewed Ms. Pontrello in person on November 21.The interviewers agreed that she demonstrated a very
strong interest in open space protections and a willingness and capacity to learn about,and participate in,
the committee's process. The interview committee felt that she would bring a new,youthful perspective to
the work of the CF Committee and that she would make an excellent addition as a District 2 Citizen
Representative.
Ms. Pontrello moved to Chimacum about five years ago. She has a degree in Ecology from the UW.After
graduation, she worked as a farm hand and helped start a farm on Whidbey Island. Since 2015, she has
managed crew on River Run Farm in Sequim and grows organic vegetables,berries and flowers, often with
the assistance of draft animals. She is particularly interested in farm land conservation and making land
more accessible for purchase by young farmers.Her other interests also include music,in particular
organizing and calling square dances.Although she is very busy during the farming season,the typical CF
calendar coincides well with her availability.
FISCAL IMPACT/COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS:
There's no fiscal impact to the county's General Fund for appointing Ms. Pontrello to serve on the CF
Committee.

RECOMMENDATION:
Environmental Public Health management and the CF interview committee recommends that Ms.Pontrello
be appointed to serve a new 4-year term on the CF Committee as a District 2 Citizen Representative.
