In the Matter of Naming The New Bridge On }
West Uncas Road Over Salmon Creek The } Resolution No. 78-18
Wally Bowman Memorial Bridge }
WHEREAS, the Bowman family was among the pioneer families on the Olympic Peninsula,
working as loggers and farmers in the Discovery Bay before the beginning of the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, Wally Bowman, born in 1926, purchased local farmland,raising show-quality
Herefords and beef cattle; and
WHEREAS, many Jefferson County residents benefited by eating locally-raised Bowman beef
after World War II; and
WHEREAS, Wally Bowman acquired and operated the one-time Knight Dairy Farm that became
the Department of Fish and Wildlife salmon habitat enhancement project on the east side of West Uncas
Road; and
WHEREAS, Wally Bowman was employed by the Jefferson County Department of Transportation
and Engineering, working his way up the ranks to department supervisor; and
WHEREAS, in his capacity as the county's chief highway man, Wally Bowman built many of the
roads in Jefferson County still in use today; and
WHEREAS, under his leadership,the original culvert that guided Salmon Creek under West
Uncas Road was built; and
WHEREAS, that culvert has been replaced by a new bridge on West Uncas Road over Salmon
Creek in 2018 in order to enhance salmon habitat; and
WHEREAS, the Discovery Bay community, led by Ray Hunter, and with the support of Wally
Bowman's family and neighbors, petitioned the Board of County Commissioners to rename the new
structure, recognizing Wally Bowman's role of neighborhood patriarch for over 60 years, lending helping
and healing hand to both neighbors and livestock;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the newly-built bridge over Salmon Creek on West Uncas
Road be named as THE WALLY BOWMAN MEMORIAL BRIDGE.
ADOPTED this 17th day of December, 2018.
