HomeMy WebLinkAboutEnvironmental Health Educator ~ JEFFERSON COUNTY Job Description Job Title: Environmental Health Educator Department: Health & Human Services Reports To: Environmental Health Director FLSA Exempt (Y IN): NO Union: UFCW BBP: NO &rf Salary Level: Grade 29 Location: Castle Hill Mall Approved By: Human Resource Manager Approved Date: January 2001 SUMMARY: Provides health education and serves as a liaison to County residents in order to prevent environmental disease and reduce the public exposure to environmental hazards, and to improve the quality of the environment; directs health education programs for group and community needs by performing the following duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned - Plans and conducts community surveys and collaborates with other environmental health specialists, community organizations, and civic groups to ascertain environmental health needs and develop desirable environmental health goals. Develops and maintains cooperation between public, civic, professional, and voluntary agencies. Prepare and disseminate age appropriate educational and informational materials on a variety of subjects pertaining to environmental health, including, but not limited to, the following: solid waste management; including waste reduction, recycling and composting, onsite sewage treatment, small water system development and operations, safe food handling, indoor air quality, illegal dumping and nuisance properties Local liaison for businesses and government agencies for technical assistance and referrals for applicable agencies in the areas of environmental health. Initiates health promotion discussions in schools, work places, community agencies and public forums. Plans for and provides educational opportunities for the community and provides educational presentations. Assists other environmental health staff with developing and presenting program specific education materials, workshops, and seminars including expanding use of internet to extend community outreach. - ,- Grant writing, DOE, DOH liaison, prepares reports and statistics. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in education or social sciences or closely related field; and five (5) years related experience in teaching or providing education in a health related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree (M.A.) in education or social sciences or closely related field preferred. ,- LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, r- technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Access Database software; Internet Explorer Internet software; MS Excel Spreadsheet software and MS WORD Word Processing software. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Washington State Driver's License - OTHER SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY: Knowledge developmental/learning theory. Knowledge of community mobilization/organizing theories and strategies.
