MEETING MINUTES
August 13, 2014
Service Officers present:
CHAIR Dick Wiltse, VFW #7498, Port Townsend
VICE -CHAIR Gary Lane,VFW #7489, Port Hadlock and American Legion
OFFICER AT LARGE Robert (Alex) Alexander, VFW #3213, Quilcene

Chairman Dick Wiltse called the meeting to order at 2:03 p.m.
Approval of Minutes: Member Lakey moved to approve the regular meeting minutes of the
July 26, 2013 meeting as presented. Vice -Chair Lane seconded the motion which carried by a unanimous vote.
Officers for 2014: Chair Wiltse opened the nominations for 2014 Officers. Member Alexander
moved to keep the current officers for 2014. Member Bach seconded the motion which carried by a unanimous
vote.
Clerk Avery noted a correction to the 2014 Executive Board Officer list needed to be made after the adjournment of
the meeting. She indicated that per discussion, (later in the meeting) Bud Schindler is no longer with the Brinnon
post and no longer associated with the SOA, leaving his spot on the Executive Board vacant. Chair Wiltse and
Vice -Chair Lane appointed Robert Lakey to be Secretary/Treasurer. It was later learned that Ken Gaul replaced Bud
Schindler at the Brinnon post.
The following Service Officers Association (SOA) members will serve as Executive Board Officers for 2014:

Review of Expenditures 2013 to current. The Veteran Service Officers reviewed the expenditures.
No action was taken.

Correction to Service Officer Contact list: Vice -Chair Lane noted that the Port Hadlock VFW and
the Port Angeles DAV numbers should be removed from the contact list. Clerk Avery stated that Bud Schindler
resigned from the Brinnon VFW Post #10706 and will look into his replacement. She added that Bill Wheeler
contacted her prior to the meeting and indicated that he lives out of state for most of the year. Member Alexander
stated that Bill Wheeler relayed to him that he did not feel right about staying on the SOA and Member Alexander
agreed with that sentiment.
Member Alexander made a motion to remove Bill Wheeler from the SOA. Vice -Chair Lane seconded the motion.
Member Bach made a motion to amend the previous motion to include the removal of Bud Schindler from the SOA.
Vice -Chair Lane seconded the motion which carried by a unanimous vote. Clerk Avery will update the contact list.
Additional Business re: Funeral Benefits: Vice -Chair Lane discussed the funeral benefit with the
SOA. He stated that due to budget concerns, the funeral benefit was temporarily reduced to $300 from the regular
$500 amount. He met with County Administrator Philip Morley to discuss the funeral benefit. Mr. Morley reassured
him that there is always around $20,000 available to the Veteran's Assistance Fund if needed. After meeting with
Mr. Morley, the death benefit was raised back to $500. Funeral applications received during the reduced timeframe
were issued $200 checks for the difference.
Group Discussion: Member Bach asked Vice -Chair Lane how the Veteran's benefit program is
doing? Vice -Chair Lane replied that Chair Wiltse and Member Lakey meet and assist Veterans on a weekly basis.
Member Alexander asked about the weekly meeting times and other avenues for Veteran's assistance were
discussed. Member Bach thanked the members who assisted the Veterans on a weekly basis.
MEETING ADJOURNED: Vice -Chair Lane made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 2:29 p.m.
Member Lakey seconded the motion which carried by a unanimous vote.
