Share air time and encourage all members to participate DRAFT MINUTES The May 8, 2019 meeting of the Empowered Teens Coalition was held at the Chimacum High School Library from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. PURPOSE OF THE MEETING: Report: Drug Take Back April 27th in PT and Hadlock; Coordinator trainings – LGBTQ “Saying it Out Loud” in Tacoma, “High in Plain Sight” in Port Angeles; Need to Schedule: Social Norms postcards to parents and students. Drug impairment training; our environmental strategy. Decisions: New action plan July 2019-June 2020 (due June). Thank you to Kris and Brian Facilitators for this meeting: Brian Mackenzie, Denise Banker In attendance: Sarah Rogers, Joe Nole, Jack Randall, Kris Becker, Ciela Meyer, Lindsay Scalf, Greg Brotherton Time/Facilitator Activity 3:30 Brian Called meeting to order. 3:32 Denise Approved agenda & minutes: Kris moved, Sarah seconded. Motions carried. 3:35 Denise Report: ~Environmental Strategy for next year: vape detectors are ineligible due to lack of evidence base. Recommend focusing on policy. ~Drug Take Back on April 27 was very positive with more than 230 lbs collected in partnership with sheriff and police, and many good community connections and conversations. ~Coalition coordinators Denise and Lindsay attended 2 trainings. Discussion re: vulnerability of LGBTQ population locally and nationwide. Denise and Lindsay highly recommend the work of Dr. Leticia Neito of Saint Martin’s University. ~ Discussion re: bringing vaping education day to Quilcene School and Blue Heron Middle School. Health-fair format at Chimacum School worked well, with multiple ways for youth to engage the information. ~Social Norms Campaign began with “Prom Promise” incentive led by the student Prevention Club. Continues with postcard mailings to students in grades 6-12 and parents of students in grades K-12. Prevention club will lead campus activities with messaging t-shirts and other prizes. May partner with local sheriff’s department and carry forward to next year’s work plan if schedule with Kitsap County provider cannot be finalized. ~Prevention page at the Jeff Co Public Health website has been updated. 4:15 Denise, All Discussion re: coalition funding streams and site selection. Denise will find out if locking retail bags for parents/guardians would be allowable use of remaining funds for this year. 4:25 Denise, All Thanks to retiring coalition members, Brian and Kris. Both are staying in the community. 4:35 All Meeting adjourned. The June 12, 2019 meeting of the Empowered Teens Coalition will be held at the Chimacum High School Library from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. There will be no Coalition Meetings in July and August. The September meeting will be Wednesday, September 11th, 2019. ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG PREVENTION IS GOOD WORK.
