SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION re: National Disability Employment Month
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Anna Mc Enery of Jefferson County Public Health, the Developmental Disabilities Program and the
Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board, has requested approval of the proclamation, proclaiming
October 2019 as National Disability Employment Month.
ANALYSIS:
Jefferson County celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October to educate the
community about disability employment issues, to recognize Jefferson County's businesses who employ
people with intellectual or developmental disabilities and the contributions of the individuals who are
employed in the community.

RECOMMENDATION:
Approve Proclamation re: Proclaiming October 2019 as National Disability Employment Month.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about
disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of Jefferson County's
employees with developmental disabilities; and
WHEREAS, disabilities affect more than 5,104 people five years of age and older who live in
Jefferson County (or, more than 16% of the population) including sensory, physical, mental and
cognitive disabilities; and
WHEREAS, disabilities know no boundaries and affect people of all races, religions, ages, cultures,
economic groups, and educational levels; and
WHEREAS, local businesses who are welcome the work force talents of individuals with intellectual or
developmental disabilities, are critical to building an inclusive and robust economy; and
WHEREAS, work is a fundamental part of identity and offers purpose and the opportunity to lead an
independent, self-directed life for all people, including individuals with intellectual or
developmental disabilities; and
WHEREAS, the values and diversity of the people of Jefferson County have made this County a leader
throughout the state of Washington in business and employment opportunities for individuals with
intellectual or developmental disabilities and;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Jefferson County Commissioners hereby proclaim October as;
NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT MONTH
And ask everyone to participate in efforts to recognize the talents of all people, including people
with developmental disabilities, as a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive community and
a strong and diverse economy; and urge all citizens to join in observing this occasion.
