My name is Lorna Shashinda. I am a resident of Jefferson County. I am a gun owner, and I have a concealed pistol license.
I oppose adopting ordinances or laws that would have the direct or indirect effect of creating a situation where no shooting
ranges are allowed in the county.
Shooting ranges are an essential component of firearm safety. Prior to purchasing my firearm, I received training at the Jefferson
County Sportsmen's Association shooting range in Port Townsend. Through their offering of the national First Shots firearm
safety training program, for just $10 I received expert training in safe and responsible handling, use, ownership, and storage of
guns. The instructors were experts and included former military and law enforcement personnel. The atmosphere at the range
was congenial, and at the same time serious and strict, as it should be.
I was able to see and try a wide range of guns and carrying equipment which enabled me to make a more informed and
appropriate choice when I made my own purchases. I also received many hours of training and practice over the course of
several months, all for that same $10.
Without shooting ranges and organizations such as the Jefferson County Sportsmen's Association, the opportunity to train
people to this high level would be lost. Instead, we would have more gun owners who are not as well trained or as well informed,
more practice shooting in non-range locations, and a net loss to the county.
I do not know how many of the BOCC are gun owners or how many have ever shot a firearm. Even those who do not choose to
own firearms benefit from receiving firearm safety training. But whatever group you fall into, I urge all of you who are involved in
these decisions to support Jefferson County residents' freedom of choice and freedom to be responsible, educated citizens.
Respectfully,
Lorna Shashinda
