To the 2019 Jefferson County Planning Commission Board…
Firstly thank you for all the research and work you do on behalf of County citizens. Your dedication is much appreciated and
hopefully will often direct the BoCC’s decisions.
I do think a shooting range is essential for local gun owners to be able to practice safe handling of their defensive weapons.
That said, there need to be rules for behavior & membership to allow such a range to be located at a convenient distance for
access. It seems to me that addressing that issue is ongoing & has been the subject of many hours of debate. I trust your
suggestions.
As far as the issue of future ranges, both indoor & outdoor, I appreciate that the prior location rules assumed that if it was not
specifically allowed in a stated area, it really meant that all other designated areas were off limits. However, as land use
designations & terms can change and as humans will always try to push boundaries, I thoroughly agree with your listing
specifically the elimination of indoor and outdoor shooting ranges in RR-5, RR-10 and RR-20 designated lands. I think all
areas which are to be considered off limits should be delineated.
And, I believe that a quasi-military training ground in the name of a “shooting range” not be allowed even miles from
residential designated property. If Forest Land has the potential for being logged, such facilities should not be allowed on
Forest Land either. The Second Amendment’s “Militia” I interpret as the U.S. armed services. Local “militia” might have to
travel to receive advanced training. I do not think Jefferson County is the proper place for such an endeavor.
There are local, state and federal rules which Counties have to obey. I trust they apply for a developer also.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter,
