I would like to encourage you to send the BOC the exact same recommendations that you did previously. It is an outrage that this project is
allowed to go forward. Please see my email to the BOC below.
Dear Commissioners,
I have been following your deliberations about the Fort Discovery Corporation’s bid to develop a shooting range, complete with facility for
military and paramilitary training, with great disappointment.
You have apparently been following advice of your (our?) attorney and are trying to avoid a lawsuit from Fort Discovery. You are doing this
by having private mediation discussions which have resulted in your ignoring the perfectly reasonable recommendations of the Planning
Commission, ending the moratorium on shooting ranges which allows Fort Discovery to build while you are in mediation, and ignoring the
fact that they were previously breaking the law by developing without a permit.
I think you might be aware of the number of people who believe that adopting the Planning Commission’s recommendations and also
penalizing Fort Discovery for disregarding the need for permits to be fully approved before developing their land is what you should be
doing. Rather, you are caving to the demands of this developer.
The Tarboo Ridge Coalition is not a small group in a small place trying to avoid a shooting range in their backyard. I contribute to and
support the Coalition despite living in the Cape George area. I do this because I am adamantly opposed to the extreme training that Fort
Discovery wants to do. I do not think this county needs to permit military training in the county outside the facilities and resources of the
military. The federal government more than adequately funds the military to do their own training. The paramilitary training is absurd. Why
should this county permit training of individuals to use military weapons? What is the purpose of their use of these weapons? I have no
problem with the county permitting an ordinary shooting range such as The Jefferson County Sportsmen’s Association has. I don’t see a
need for the county to permit a facility like Fort Discovery wants to build and operate.
Further, you cannot ignore the fact that your mediation process has resulted in a negative ruling by the Growth Management Board. You
must be aware that having secret mediation meetings which result in a negative ruling by a State agency, ignoring your own Planning
Commission, and not penalizing a developer who develops without a permit does not sit well with your constituency, even those who once
voted for you. Continuing in this fashion will not get any one of you re-elected. I admire politicians who take a principled stand even when
it is not favored by their constituents but this is not a principled stand. It is running scared in front of a bully. You must do something
differently. You are not acting like a governing body, at least not one I can support. Please reconsider.
Most sincerely,
