Tuesday's public hearing

Dear Planning Commission:
Thank you for hosting a public hearing regarding the issues around shooting ranges. Although I did not choose to submit oral
testimony at the hearing, I choose to submit this as written testimony:
I didn’t realize that the rulings that have been discussed have put the existing indoor shooting range, in Port Townsend, at risk
of financial hardship. That would be disastrous. There needs to be a safe place for people to discharge firearms. I understand
there is grant funding available to address some of those concerns.
Where I live, neighboring Pope Resources Lands, there is gun noise around us a lot. Although the noise is a bit annoying, what
is a concern is the safety. Sometimes, I choose not to walk on our trails on our own property, because during hunting season,
people with guns are walking around out there nearby. Sometimes I hear gunfire very near our home. My 5 year old son,
husband, and I would hate to see the closure of legitimate, safe place for people to shoot weapons, as I see the potential to
direct more people coming to our neighborhood to shoot (as is happening now with folks from Kitsap who don’t currently
have that).
I DO SUPPORT indoor shooting ranges for safe places for shooting practice.
I am very concerned about the locations of outdoor, recreational shooting ranges as well as paramilitary training facilities that
are being considered in the county.
I DO NOT support the placement of these types of facilities in our region.
Although I am particularly familiar with the proposals made regarding the Tarboo Lake area. I understand that how these rules
are being considered, paramilitary training facilities are being proposed.
I heard several people at the hearing say, “If you don’t like the shooting noises, you shouldn’t live near a gun range.”
The same should be said to people who want to build gun ranges or paramilitary training facilities: “If you don’t like peaceful,
democratically savvy people who just want to grow food for their communities, provide mental health services to veterans
and others who suffer from trauma, give safe places for bees, trees, fish, birds, clean water (lakes, streams, groundwater, and
the watersheds that will find their way to the sea), then don’t try to build your outdoor facilities in their neighborhoods!”
I moved to Tarboo Valley in 2008 to start an organic farm business. I fell in love with the area and decided to stay here. My
husband, son, and I bought a home and now live there, near Lake Leland. We appreciate the local economy that supports:
Biking, fishing, boating, bird watching, hiking, growing organic food products from land and sea, (but especially HONEY),
healthy living and care for the earth (clean water, land, and air).
I chose Jefferson County to start a family because I believed that this was one of those places, where a local economy
supports those things. Please choose to support what truly makes this county special and protect our way of life.
Please choose to support INDOOR ranges and choose to keep the pollution contained, both in the noise and the spent
