Planning Commission:
My name is Terry Bryant and I travel the 100 mile round trip from my home in Bremerton, to the Sportsman Club once a
week and some weekends to shoot. The reason for this Is the ranges at this club are well organized, designed, and safe. I
bring my grandchildren to this range to shoot both for prac ce and to compete in some of the shoo ng events.
There are, es mated, 120.1 firearms for every 100 ci zens in the U.S. That ’s about 380 plus million firearms. One reason
gun clubs are important is to teach gun safety as well as safe gun handling techniques. As a parent and grandparent I made
sure both my children and grandchildren know about gun safety as many people, including kids are seriously injured or killed
every year because they know li le to nothing about gun safety. My children went through drivers educa on to be safe
drivers, the same should apply to firearms.
I grew-up with firearms in my family and most of the adult males in my family, while growing-up, were WWII veterans. I
am re red military and used firearms as part of my du es. I also shot on marksmanship teams. I also worked for the San
Diego County Sheriffs Department for a number of years before coming back to Washington State where I re red and
became a high school teacher un l I re red from teaching. I taught in a Junior ROTC program for high school students and
gun safety was part of the curriculum because we had a rifle team. Yes, there are high schools with both rifle and archery
teams who use local ranges for prac ce. Firearms are also used in Olympic Spor ng events as well as in the Military
Olympics.
Shoo ng sports and hun ng provide billions of tax dollars every year for both wildlife and land conserva on, which is
something the ant-gun crowd don’t seem to realize. Also, in the U.S., firearms are used by the general public to defend
themselves from about 500,000 to 3 million mes a year from violent crimes. These are people just like you. Police usually
arrive at a crime scene a er the crime has already occurred. Criminals are criminals because they do not obey the law, that
includes gun laws.
One of the types of firearm training I teach is for church security teams, plus I help out teaching basic firearm safety and
gun handling, level one and level two defense classes. Jefferson County Sportsman Club provides a safe well organized venue
for these types of classes. Clubs such as these provide a public service where the general public can safely go, learn about,
and prac ce with firearms, instead of out in the woods someplace where both they and others may be at risk using firearms.
This is what Kitsap County is experiencing at this me because of range closures. Please keep this range open, so the
hundreds of people who use this range have a safe place to shoot and train.
