HomeMy WebLinkAboutM111219 Tourism Coordinating Council – Jefferson County Minutes of the Meeting of the Coordinating Council November 12, 2019 (DRAFT) The November 2019 meeting of the Tourism Coordinating Council (TCC) for Jefferson County, was called to order at 10:10 am by TCC Chair Roney, noting membership to reach a quorum was present with Council members Cleone Telling, Diana Smeland, Joy Baisch, Marsha Massey and Bill Roney in attendance. Partners Present: Bethany Smith TCC Marketing Coordinator present: Steve Shively Consent Agenda Approval of October 8 TCC minutes and current TCC Financials was approved by consent CALL TO ORDER CONSENT AGENDA OPTC - Marsha Massey provided the following OPTC (Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission) highlights: • Covered recent OPTC meeting, including: o Reviewed highlights from recent OPTC-OCL Symposium o 25 in attendance as November OPTC meeting o State Tourism saw both WTMA and WTA on annual retreats. Under contract with Sky Media for marketing. State tourism branding is down to top-two finalists. NPS noting final phase of Lake Crescent Hwy 101 road work, $3M demonstrated in matched funding has successfully released $1.5M in current support. Moving onwards towards similar match funding formula for 2019-2020. State is attending a full series of trade shows, with lots of media requests being processed thanks to Christina’s good work. o Fall Ads are up including bus ads in Seattle/Bellevue, Pierce Co. and Portland with Port Ludlow, TCC, OPVB and Sequim collaboration o Port of Seattle Spotlight grant resulted in successful “The Roadtrip is Back” early metrics CA, NY, AZ, FL, TX target – 80% with 4,800 travel planners either ordered or downloaded. o Important Grays Harbor Tourism collaboration meeting taking place. o 2020 Travel Planner design work has begun. Marketing Report Steve provided a TCC briefing of current marketing activities, including: • Everyone is invited to attend OPTC, Thursday December 5, 11am-1pm, at Port Ludlow. RSVP for luncheon with Allegra Warwick, 360-452-8552, <info@olympicpeninsula.org> • Steve and Bill invited everyone out to Kalaloch Lodge, Nov. 15-17 for West End Weekend, sponsored by Jefferson County Historical Society. • Reviewed the LTAC process. Reviewing initial ‘Org Chart’ of how TCC fits into the entire tourism promotions landscape. • Reviewed presentation highlights from joint OPTC-OCL Symposium, inclusive of JeffCo. visitor spend increasing 54% from 2010 to 2018, and 0.47 cents of every visitor dollar being spent in County on culinary tourism products. • Bus ads are up and being seen in Pierce Co., Seattle/Bellevue and Portland • Social media reach comparison between Facebook (ave. 18,400+ reach) to Instagram (and the challenges of ‘feeding’ Instagram with the required visual content. • Print ads for fall and winter continue, with 2020 Travel Planner prep underway • Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary received important “Sentential Site” designation in order to further study OA (Ocean Acidificaiton) OPTC REPORT TCC MARKETING COORDINATORS REPORT Area Updates: Port Ludlow – Diana shared a number of Port Ludlow initiatives, including: • King 5 aired a nice “5 Ports to Visit” segment Nov. 4 with Port Ludlow in the mix. • Community welcomes grand opening of new Mexican restaurant • Winter Golf series underway • New ‘Annual’ Tree lighting taking place December 2, 4:30 p.m. • Holiday Tasting Meals will be offered starting December 5 Gateway VIC – Bill noted: • Early indication is that OPGVC received most of its requested 2020 LTAC funding. • JeffCo. will pay for some parking lot grading out of other funds. • All encouraged to attend Westend weekend – Nov. 15-16-17 see http://jchsmuseum.org/NewsAndEvents/WestEndWeekend.html for details. • VIC experiencing seasonal drop of numbers. Noting that OPGVC is showing the least amount of decline in visitor numbers reported by OPTC. Quilcene – Cleone shared highlights including: • “Go Seahawks!” • Good Veterans Day celebrations • Historic carved Cedar Eagle on porch of museum has been refurbished. • Worthington House has big holiday event scheduled for December 7, featuring ‘Gifts of Hope’ program and plenty of successful historic preservation results to show off. • Celebration of the 20 volunteer docents will be held tomorrow night. Brinnon – Joy shared that Dosewallips State Park remains packed with visitors. Over 300K in attendance YTD; their cabins are prime attractions. • Road to Elk Horn parking lot refurbished. Continued recommending mile-5 access back country 12-mile bridge. • Pleasant Harbor is busy. Marina House hosting upcoming Master Facilities Open House. • Lots of Elk activity. Herd numbering 82. Tri-Area – Bethany shared • The Old Alcohol Plant and Bayside Housing event was a success. • Big results from September’s Gala for Bayside Housing. • Bayside Development Director position is open. • Nov. 2 will bring in Seafair poets, for Community Boar project. • Thanksgiving hosted buffet 12 noon -5PM buffet with Chef Troy • December 14 will be Hadlock’s ‘Holiday Day’ community celebration Adjournment - There being no further business the TCC meeting was adjourned at 11:53 AM Next meeting of TCC is Tuesday December 10, 2019 – 10:00 AM at the Inn at Port Ludlow.
