HomeMy WebLinkAboutSolid Waste Laborer JEFFERSON COUNTY Job Description Job Title: Solid Waste Laborer Department: Public Works Reports To: Solid Waste Operations Coordinator, Solid Waste Manager FLSA Exempt: NO Union: Teamsters HIPAA: Level 4 BBP: NO Grade: A4-B Location: Solid Waste Transfer Station and Quilcene Drop BQX Site • Approved By: Human Resources Manager '. -,C Approved Date: January 2020 SUMMARY This position performs several essential duties for the Solid Waste Division including grounds maintenance and miscellaneous labor at Solid Waste facilities and surrounding areas. Duties may also include substituting for the Scale House Attendant and the Transfer Station Attendant positions as needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Miscellaneous labor duties assigned by the Solid Waste Operations Coordinator or Acting Lead position. Clean facilities and surrounding areas. Clean up litter at facilities. Painting and other maintenance duties. Basic landscape maintenance using weed eater, shovels, etc. Answer questions regarding services provided by the Solid Waste Division or refer the public to the appropriate person to respond to questions, complaints, and problems. Perform other labor tasks as directed. Scale House: Greet customers at site and utilize a specialized computer program that receipts cash and records charges at the Transfer Station. Handle cash and maintain a cash drawer,daily closeout and balance. Open temporary accounts. Transfer Station: Spot customers' vehicles disposing of solid waste at the Transfer Station. Inspect waste before it is dumped to prevent unacceptable material being placed in the Transfer Station. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree(GED); and one(1)to three(3)months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure,using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES,LICENSES,REGISTRATIONS Valid Washington State Driver's License. Familiarity with hand and power tools, equipment and techniques commonly used in the performance of related tasks. Interpersonal skills for communicating with coworkers,the public and supervisors. Knowledge of or ability to successfully complete training on the computer software used at the site. Knowledge of computer, 10-key calculator, and other common office equipment in area of assignment. Ability to utilize independent decision making skills to complete daily workload. Ability to handle multiple, unexpected interruptions on an ongoing basis. Ability to allocate time for necessary tasks. Ability to independently assign priority to daily workload. Ability to train and provide guidance to other part time employees in the same or similar position. Ability to maintain a pleasant, courteous demeanor in dealing with the public in a sometimes stressful environment. Ability to interact in a professional manner with County employees, business representatives and the general public. Ability to maintain orderliness in scale building and surrounding grounds. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain. Ability to follow safety protocol for assigned tasks. Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)during performance of tasks. Ability to read and follow instructions for the safe operation of tools. Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets(SDS)for products used in performance of the job.
