Dear Ron,
Thanks for sending me the sketch of your property and your proposed buffer
enhancements along the Bogachiel River. Unfortunately I was not able to make a site visit but
based on our conversations and aerial photo of the area I feel your proposal has benefits fo:
fish and wildlife.
In the first 50' back from the river where the forest has not been recently disturbed
there appears to be a sufficient number of trees and shrubs. No additional planting would be
necessary.
From 50' to 150' back from the river you propose planting conifer trees on a 12' x 12'
spacing, taking into consideration that you will have to work around existing trees. Since sitka
spruce and western hemlock are the species growing in the area so these would be the
species to plant. This will provide a good base for habitat as they grow. Since there are elk
present I feel that planting additional shrubs would not be cost-effective as they would be
eaten. Over time the area will seed in with additional trees and shrubs from the plants within
the 50' buffer.
If you have further questions please contact 'me.
Sincerely,
Al Latham
