HomeMy WebLinkAbout041320_cbs01Regular Agenda JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners Philip Morley, County Administrator FROM: Leslie Locke, Executive Assistant DATE: April 13, 2020 SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION re: Proclaiming the Month of April as Volunteer Appreciation Month STATEMENT OF ISSUE: April is Volunteer Appreciation Month. The Commissioners are asked to approve a proclamation and call on citizens to volunteer in our community's response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, ask citizens to continue to volunteer for other community needs throughout the rest of the year, and urge all citizens to recognize, thank and honor the many volunteers in this community who are working on behalf of others without being motivated by financial or material gain. FISCAL IMPACT There is no fiscal impact to Jefferson County. RECOMMENDATION: Approve Proclamation re: Proclaiming the Month of April as Volunteer Appreciation Month Date WHEREAS, the Month of April has been designated as the time to recognize the hard work, dedication and passion of volunteers and national service members throughout our nation; and, WHEREAS, government alone cannot meet all of our nation's needs, so we partner with businesses, faith -based organizations, non-profit organizations, foundations and individuals who serve in county government and in our community to make a difference; and, WHEREAS, most organizations in small towns, rural counties and the largest cities would not function without volunteers; and, WHEREAS, Jefferson County is committed to encouraging volunteerism and national service among its employees, citizens, partners, businesses and organizations; and, WHEREAS, by volunteering and recognizing those who serve, we promote partnership, understanding and collaborative problem -solving in our community; and, WHEREAS, thousands of Americans have volunteered to help their fellow citizens following natural 'disasters around the country. After devastating hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, and wildfires, countless Americans answered the call to help others rebuild and recover; and, WHEREAS, April 20, 2020 is National Volunteer Recognition Day and the week of April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week; and WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, volunteers are indispensable to our community's successful response and recovery from the pandemic, and volunteers provide people much needed support and relief. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Jefferson County Commissioners do hereby proclaim April 2020 as: VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION MONTH in Jefferson County. We call on citizens to volunteer in our community's response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, ask citizens to continue to volunteer for other community needs throughout the rest of the year, and urge all citizens to recognize, thank and honor the many volunteers in this community who are working on behalf of others without being motivated by financial or material gain.
