HomeMy WebLinkAboutUniformed Support Services - Corrections OfficerJEFFERSON COUNTY Job Description Attachment Description: Uniformed Support Services Job Titles: Corrections Officer Court Deputy Animal Services Officer Department: Sheriffs Office The attachment is to be made part of each of the following job descriptions: - Corrections Officer - Court Deputy - Animal Services Officer Three Job Descriptions in One Classification: In an effort to streamline the Sheriff s Office cross unitization of employees, the Sheriff s Office has created the Uniformed Support Services Division. This allows the Sheriff s Office to incorporate three separate working classifications into one unit. The group classification includes the following three job descriptions: Corrections Officer and Court Deputy and Animal Services Officer. Civil Service Testing: The creation of the Uniformed Support Services Division allows for a "wrap around" job classification recognizing the common requirements shared by all three job descriptions. Thus, allowing a single Civil Service examination. This also allows for flexibility and cross -utilization between these three job descriptions as workload and staffing flow occur. Within the unit, the Sheriff s Office enumerates by title the specific duties, responsibilities, skills and requirements of these positions as described in each of the job descriptions. This position is part of the Uniformed Support Services division which incorporates three separate working classifications into one unit and includes Corrections Officer, Court Deputy, and Animal Services Officer. These classifications may be cross -utilized as workload and staffing flow occur. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The position's essential duties and responsibilities include the following: Supervises the security and conduct of inmates in cells, during group meetings, meals, bathing, at recreation, during visitations, and on work and other assignments. Process large amounts of legal paperwork between the facility, inmates and courts. Observes conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes. Escorts inmates to and from various locations, including courts, visiting areas, medical offices, and religious services. Books inmates into detention facilities, following established procedures. Issues clothing and supplies to inmates. Completes and records bail transactions and agreements. Processes inmate discharges and transfers. Receives, maintains, and accounts for inmates' personal property. Visually and physically searches inmates and their quarters for contraband, weapons, or narcotics. Inspects and directs cleaning activities of inmates for maintenance of sanitation, orderliness, and safety. Inspects locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates for tampering. Assigns, supervises, and directs inmates during work assignments. Jefferson County Job Description: Uniformed Support Services — Corrections Officer Page 2 of 4 Transports inmates to Court, Hospital, and other correctional facilities as directed. Patrols assigned areas for evidence of forbidden activities, infraction of rules, and unsatisfactory attitude or adjustment of prisoners. Assists in suppressing and controlling problems that might occur, to include the use of physical force when legal and reasonably necessary. Reports observations to supervisors. Participates in programs designed to prepare inmates for release. Screens and directs visitors to facility. Prepares written reports concerning incidence of inmate disturbances or injuries. Serves process within the Jefferson County Jail. Drives transport vans and marked law enforcement vehicles in the course of performing duties. Within the scope of training, assists deputies in other assignments within the Sheriff's Office on a temporary or emergency basis. Periodically assists the Civil Unit with safety and security duties at the Jefferson County Courthouse. Cross -trains with other responsibilities in the Sheriff's Office as directed, possibly to include training to act on a temporary or emergency basis as an Animal Control Deputy, Court Deputy, or Acting Corrections Sergeant when necessary. Provides support to other law enforcement officers in emergency situations, or as otherwise directed. When required, is available to work outside of regular work hours. Must be able to work mandatory overtime in the jail facility as required by the Sheriff or his/her designee Testify in court as needed. Performs other tasks as directed. Other duties may be assigned by the Sheriff or his/her designee. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Must be 21 years of age. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Post secondary education in a law enforcement field is desirable. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Excel Spreadsheet software and MS Word Processing software. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Washington State Driver's License with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations and ability to maintain a valid license. Must successfully complete the Washington State Corrections Academy within one (1) year of employment. Must be able to pass a Personal Background Evaluation including a Polygraph test, Psychological Test, Physical Exam, Drug Screen and fingerprinting. OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to make effective decisions in emergency (life and death) situations. Ability to understand several conversations happening at the same time. Ability to assign priority to calls and identifying potential dangers associated with a call Ability to read maps accurately. Ability to write detailed incident, activity and other reports. Knowledge of Jefferson County place names and locations.
