Three Job Descriptions in One Classification: In an effort to streamline the Sheriff s Office cross
unitization of employees, the Sheriff s Office has created the Uniformed Support Services Division. This
allows the Sheriff s Office to incorporate three separate working classifications into one unit. The group
classification includes the following three job descriptions: Corrections Officer and Court Deputy and
Animal Services Officer.
Civil Service Testing: The creation of the Uniformed Support Services Division allows for a "wrap
around" job classification recognizing the common requirements shared by all three job descriptions.
Thus, allowing a single Civil Service examination. This also allows for flexibility and cross -utilization
between these three job descriptions as workload and staffing flow occur. Within the unit, the Sheriff s
Office enumerates by title the specific duties, responsibilities, skills and requirements of these positions as
described in each of the job descriptions.

SUMMARY: Limited -Commission deputy responsible for providing security in the county courthouse
and county courtrooms, and for assisting the Chief Civil Deputy in the service of process and execution of
court orders. This position is part of the Uniformed Support Services division which incorporates three
separate working classifications into one unit and includes Corrections Officer, Court Deputy, and
Animal Services Officer. These classifications may be cross -utilized as workload and staffing flow occur.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The position's essential duties and responsibilities
include the following:
Engages in security duties to ensure the safety of all persons present in the courtrooms and courthouse.
Enforces state law and county ordinance in the courtrooms, courthouse, and at any other assigned duty
location.
Directs and controls pedestrian traffic within the facility as needed.
Assures, to the best of his/her capability, the safety of all persons in the courtroom for court related
business.
Assists contracted security as needed, at security checkpoints and any other location on the courthouse
grounds.
Secures courtrooms, jury rooms, and chambers before and after court.
When necessary, screens persons entering any courtrooms; examines bags, parcels, packs, and other
carried items, checking for weapons; confiscates any weapon and any item that could be used as a
weapon.
Enforces courtroom rules as directed by the sitting Judge.
Upon the sitting Judge's order, takes into custody and detains any identified person(s).
Arrests persons suspected of committing crimes and persons for whom arrest warrants have been issued.

Transports arrestees and inmates.
Drives transport vans and marked law enforcement vehicles in the course of performing duties.
Assists Corrections Officers with inmates as needed.
Takes charge of out -of -control situations; intervenes and acts or assists in case of emergency; is
responsible for the safe and orderly evacuation of persons at the Courthouse in the event of an emergency.
Patrols periodically, throughout the Courthouse as well as surrounding buildings and grounds on foot to
enforce decorum, prevent and discover crimes, maintain order, and answer calls and complaints.
Answers staff or citizens' requests for services at the scene of disputes and disturbances within or
surrounding the courthouse facilities; investigates suspicious activities, persons, and vehicles and
responds to disturbances within or surrounding the courthouse facility.
Warns violator of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and
apprehend or expels persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts.
Performs first aid and provides other assistance to accident and other victims.
Receives and processes all civil legal papers to be served or executed in the County.
Serves process and executes court orders throughout the County.
Performs law enforcement duties such as serving warrants, detaining suspects, making arrests, and
transporting arrestees to jail.
Assists the Chief Civil Deputy or other Civil Office personnel with the execution of court orders.
Writes complete and concise reports.
Testify in court as needed.
Performs general office duties such as typing, data entry, completion of activity logs, and similar
activities.
Within the scope of training, assists deputies in other assignments within the Sheriff's Office on a
temporary or emergency basis — for example, by providing safety and security at the JCSO Jail.
Cross -trains with other responsibilities in the Sheriff's Office as directed, possibly to include training to
act on a temporary or emergency basis as an Animal Control Deputy, Corrections Deputy, or Acting
Chief Civil Deputy when necessary.
Provides support to other law enforcement officers in emergency situations, or as otherwise directed.
When required, is available to work outside of regular work hours.
Must be able to work mandatory overtime in the jail facility as required by the Sheriff or his/her designee.

Performs other tasks as directed. Other duties may be assigned by the Sheriff or his/her designee.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education
degree (GED.) Must be 21 years of age. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Post secondary education
in a law enforcement field is desirable.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common technical
journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries
or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business
community.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two -digit numbers and to
multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of
American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out
detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems
involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have
knowledge of MS Excel Spreadsheet software and MS Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Washington State Driver's License with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations and
ability to maintain a valid license.
Must successfully complete the Washington State Corrections Academy within one (1) year of
employment.
Must successfully complete Sheriff's Basic Civil Function Academy within one (1) year of employment.
Must meet one of the following qualifications for law enforcement training:
1) Must have successfully completed at least one of the following, with related field experience:
a. The CJTC Basic Law Enforcement Academy, and/or
b. The CJTC Corrections Officer Academy, and/or
c. The CJTC Reserve Officer Academy.
-OR-
2) Demonstrate at least three (3) years of prior military, law enforcement, corrections or security
experience in a similar position, with references and no significant disciplinary events (including
termination in lieu of discipline); and, within six (6) months of employment, complete training
regarding basic criminal procedures and law, use of force, driving, and any other agency -required
training; and, at the discretion of the Sheriff, may be required to complete either a CJTC
Corrections Officer Academy or a CJTC Reserve Officer Academy
(NOTE: If possessing or acquiring a Reserve Certificate, the candidate will not be permitted to serve as an
active reserve with JCSO.)
Must complete additional in-service trainings and maintain ongoing certifications as directed.
Must be able to pass a Personal Background Evaluation including a Polygraph test, Psychological Test,
Physical Exam, Drug Screen and fingerprinting.
