Three Job Descriptions in One Classification: In an effort to streamline the Sheriff s Office cross
unitization of employees, the Sheriff s Office has created the Uniformed Support Services Division. This
allows the Sheriff s Office to incorporate three separate working classifications into one unit. The group
classification includes the following three job descriptions: Corrections Officer and Court Deputy and
Animal Services Officer.
Civil Service Testing: The creation of the Uniformed Support Services Division allows for a "wrap
around" job classification recognizing the common requirements shared by all three job descriptions.
Thus, allowing a single Civil Service examination. This also allows for flexibility and cross -utilization
between these three job descriptions as workload and staffing -flow occur. Within the unit, the Sheriff s
Office enumerates by title the specific duties, responsibilities, skills and requirements of these positions as
described in each of the job descriptions.

SUMMARY: Performs duties related to the daily enforcement of Animal Services regulations in the field
to meet the requirements established by the City of Port Townsend and Jefferson County and promote
compliance and enforcement of state laws, WACS and Ordinances regulating animal treatment by
performing the following duties. This position is part of the Uniformed Support Services division which
incorporates three separate working classifications into one unit and includes Corrections Officer, Court
Deputy, and Animal Services Officer. These classifications may be cross -utilized as workload and
staffing flow occur.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The position's essential duties and responsibilities
include the following:
Assist with the enforcement of all ordinances and laws of the City, County, and the State of Washington
relating to the care, treatment, control, impound and licensing of animals.
Understand, comply with and administer Commissioned Officer Duties as outlined in the Criminal Justice
Training Animal Control Academy.
Maintain accurate records of animal control activity.
Follow-up on complaints relating to the care of animals and report back to the 'Reporting Party'.
Patrols assigned areas.
Resolve conflicts relating to problems with animals.
Inform the public through verbal explanation or literature relating to the care and responsibility of animals
and licenses.
Write complete concise reports. Prepare monthly activity reports pertinent to Animal Service activity.
Capture and transport animals to housing facilities as appropriate.
Respond to calls for service outside normal work hours.
Coordinates animal services program with other organizations such as the Jefferson County Humane

Society.
Function as a point of contact for the public on issues related to Animal Services and animal control,
including personal contact, through education outreach and assistance with enforcement of animal control
ordinances.
Testify in court as needed.
May give public presentations to Community Groups.
Within the scope of training, assists deputies in other assignments within the Sheriff's Office on a
temporary or emergency basis — for example, by providing safety and security at the JCSO Jail.
Cross -trains with other responsibilities in the Sheriff's Office as directed, possibly to include training to
act on a temporary or emergency basis as a Corrections Officer or Court Deputy.
When required, is available to work outside of regular work hours.
Must be able to work mandatory overtime in the jail facility as required by the Sheriff or his/her designee.
Performs other tasks as directed. Other duties may be assigned by the Sheriff or his/her designee.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill,

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED.) Must be 21 years of age. Must be a U.S.
Citizen. Post -secondary education in a law enforcement field is desirable.
LANGUAGE SHILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal
documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory
agencies, or members of the business community.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two -digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement,
volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral
instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situations.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Excel Spreadsheet
software and MS Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Washington State Driver's License with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations and
ability to maintain a valid license.
Must successfully complete the Washington State Corrections Academy within one (1) year of
employment.
Must successfully complete the Washington State Animal Control Academy within one (1) year of
employment.
Must successfully complete Euthanasia and Chemical Capture Certification within one (1) year of
employment.
Must complete additional in-service trainings and maintain ongoing certifications as directed.
Must be able to pass a Personal Background Evaluation including a Polygraph test, Psychological Test,
Physical Exam, Drug Screen and fingerprinting.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to supervise activities of kennel aid, clerk hire and other shelter workers including inmates,

community service organizations and must work in a constructive manner.
Ability to make effective decisions in emergency situations.
Ability to understand several conversations happening at the same time.
Ability to assign priority to calls and identify potential dangers associated with a call.

Ability to write detailed incident, activity and other reports.
Knowledge of Jefferson County place names and locations.
