HomeMy WebLinkAboutLTAC M051499 Memo To: From: Date: Subject: L T AC' Committee Members David Goldsmith, Staff to L TAC, Deputy Director of Public Services June 3. 1999 Minutes Meeting May 14, 1999 Attending: Chair Glen Huntingford, Bob Hobart. Jutta Gebauer, Dr. Nikki Clark, absent Sam Claud Marine Science Center field trip. The L T AC committee met at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. There, the committee reviewed a proposal by the Center for long term capital funding to renovate Building #502, which will expand the Center's base of operation and allow a partnership with the Burke Museum. Following the tour and explanation the committee reconvened at the Courthouse. Chair Huntingford called the meeting to order at approximately 3:30 p.m. Marine Science Center Funding Request: First order of business was the review of the Marine Science Centers proposal for funding. The committee reviewed Ordinance 02-0622-98 which sets up the basis for fund distribution. The committee concluded the capital request was not a good fìt to the definition of a 'Tourist Related Facility' as specified in the ordinance and is not an identified element of a comprehensive tourism promotion strategy (no such plan has been developed to date). Additionally, the committee is committed to the development of the Olympic Gateway Visitor Center as its fìrst priority. Given the above, the committee recommends the funding request be denied. Gateway Center Review: The committee was briefed by Gary Rowe on the progress towards development of the Gateway Center. The committee was infonned that the Public Works Department is moving forward with the project and will be laying out a time line and schedule of activities. Efforts to secure grant funds and develop partnerships with other agencies are also being pursued. The committee recommends that the project be treated as a priority and appropriately staffed. Regional Promotion: The committee reviewed regional promotional material being developed. The material was approved in concept and the Board of Commissioners will develop a welcoming paragraph to be part of the brochure. The committee recommends moving forward to publish the document for summer distribution. The committee discussed meeting with the City L T AC this fall to see if the two organizations can coordinate their efTorts and explore funding assistance for the Gateway Center. The committee adjourned at 4:45 p.m. Next meeting tentatively scheduled July 13,2 p.m.
