A filter is placed between the upper column and the lower collection vessel (Figure 33.1—Item 2). The filter consists of a stainless steel mesh which will not allow the chopped trim to enter the lower collection vessel. The system includes a separator expansion vessel (Figure 33.1—Item 3) which acts to prohibits the reverse flow of solvent into the collection vessel. This vessel also pre-condenses the solvent to assist the recovery pump in it's performance. Figure 33.1 item 5 shows the refrigerant recovery pump rated for use with the listed solvents and rated for use within a potentially explosive environment (See page 19). The specified amount of Trim (chopped up Marijuana) is loaded into the upper chamber and pressed to the filter. The amount may be 2 lbs of Trim per Material vessel (2 included in EX4- 502) depending on the quantity of extract desired. Once the Trim is loaded in the upper chamber the upper chamber cap is installed. See Figure 34.1 Figure 34.1—Upper Chamber cap Installed with hose connected With the lid replaced at the upper chamber and all valves closed to the upper chamber and lower collection vessel the system is sealed. The two pressure vessels are mechanically conneccted and sealed. The operator confirms that all pressure Gauges show no pressure. The operator now must create a reduced pressure atmosphere within the vessels using a vacuum pump. The vacuum pump is a small % HP size capable of drawing a vacuum of nearly 22 inHg. 02/24/2015 Project: 150205 IF EX4-502 Closed Loop Extractor Page 34 of 41 KD Doc. 150205ER Confidential-Proprietary Document a • - . • ' ‘-• tti Olt*. gle• I 14NIS: On the Extra-._ .-;i -is are removed and the upper lid he lower collection vessel (Figure 33.1 - fts .nesh winch will not allow the cf-loppeei trim to enter tile , -,-;stern inclodes a separator expansion vessel (Figure 33.1—ltem 3 r -v- of solvent into the collection 1 his Niess5..ii, to assrit the recovery pump in it's perio; rated for use with the listed sc.‘ieni-. er:',A,-•(.4irlient (See page 19). With the vacuum connected in a normal atmosphere not in the presence of Butane or propane the operator turns on the vacuum pump (not shown in figure) and now reduces the pressure within the closed system to nearly 22 inHg. The pressure gauge located on the Closed Loop Extractor will show the reduced pressure. Once achieved, the operator turns off the vacuum pump and removes it from the quick coupler. Now the two vessels are at a reduced pressure. The Extraction process is now ready to commence. The operator now connects the Butane recovery tank(DOT type container of 30 pounds/60 pounds of Butane/ Propane, Item 4)to the same quick coupler where the vacuum pump was connected. With this connection made the operator turns either a ball valve or needle valve on the recovery tank. The Liquid Butane compressed at 30 to 50 psi is cyphened by the reduced pressure in the upper chamber of the Closed Loop extractor. Butane flows from the recovery tank towards the upper chamber. Due to the increased volume and reduced pressure the Liquid Butane changes phase and turns to a gas filling the Upper chamber of the Closed Loop Extractor. The operator now sees a rise in the pressure of the Closed Loop Extractor from nearly -30 psi to approximately 20 to 25 psi. The pressure increase is less than that required to compress the Butane. As the liquid changes phase the temperature of the system decreases based on the rate of liquid Butane allowed to flow. The recovery tank is set on top of a weight scale to determine the weight of Butane transferred to the Upper chamber. This is important in recording the efficiency of the transfer. The operator now closes the ball valve or needle valve on the recovery tank and removes the Ball check quick coupler from the upper chamber. No gas is released due to the use of the two Ball check quick couplers which are similar to Hydraulic connections. For the EX4-502, the operator now must change out the processed Material vessel and install the second Material vessel. The process of applying the solvent through the second Material vessel is now followed as it was for the first Material vessel. The Butane gas now rests with the Trim within the Material vessel extracting oils. As the oils are extracted they permeate through the filter into the collection vessel similar to a Drip Coffee machine. 02/24/2015 Project: 150205 IF EX4-502 Closed Loop Extractor Page 35 of 41 KD Doc. 150205ER Confidential-Proprietary Document rj The ope_ratot conrrtr,:ttt -.be Cr to a ball check quick coupler. The recovery pump now creates a reduced pressure using it's internal compressor. This reduced pressure and increased volume has the effect of vaporizing and removing the Butane gas from the Closed Loop Extractor into the recovery pump. The recovery pump has an onboard storage tank. The Butane gas is compressed using nearly 30 to 50 psi of pressure and stored as Liquefied Butane within the recovery pump. The recovery pump can at this time start transferring the Butane to the recovery tank. The recovery pump acts to move the Butane gas from the Closed Loop Extractor to the recovery tank where it is compressed at 30 to 50 psi. Once the full weight of the Butane is measured by the operator using the Weight scale under the recovery tank, the recovery pump is stopped. The valves between the Closed Loop Extractor lower chamber and the recovery pump purge line are closed. This closes off the Closed Loop Extractor from the recovery pump. The operator confirms that there is no pressure indicated on the recovery pump purge line pressure gauge. This line can now be removed from the Closed Loop Extractor using the Ball Check Quick Couplers. The valves at the recovery tank are now closed by the operator. This seals the compressed Butane within the recovery tank. The internal pressure of the compressed Butane within the tank is approximately 50 psi. The operator now closes the ball valve at the recovery pump discharge line. The recovery pump discharge line pressure gauge should read zero pressure. With this confirmed the operator removes the line from the recovery tank and recovery pump discharge. The lines to the recovery pump are stored according to the manufacturers instructions. Butane has not been lost due to the following of the above procedure and the use of the ball check valve quick couplers and the 90 degree ball valves at each end of the connecting lines. The extraction process is now complete and the recovery of the solvent is complete. The recovery pump may be unplugged at this time. The operator now retrieves the correct wrench needed to remove the sanitary Tri-Clamp (8 inch diameter)from the lower collection vessel on the Closed Loop Extractor. The operator utilizes a spark free tool during this process of removing the upper chamber(item 1 from figure 33.1) and the lower collection vessel (item 2 from figure 33.1). The operator removes and then stores the upper chamber in a designated location within the Control Area. Then the operator examines the Extracted substance within the lower collection vessel which is now exposed to atmosphere. 02/24/2015 Project: 150205 IF EX4-502 Closed Loop Extractor Page 37 of 41 KD Doc. 150205ER Confidential -Proprietary Document The recover y; ..,;t - a reduced zressure using it's intern 3C C: : = • ',las the effect of vaporizing a-1 Loty:', Extractor into the recovery pump. the ;,-:;; i.)vc.;;„ - •:. ; ,. . s is compressed using nearly 30 to ',Cf: ps; , • the recovery pump. The operator using sanitary tools, now scoops the extract into a sanitary container such as a bowl or other food grade container. This extract within the container is now moved to a second room or area for secondary processing. The secondary processing consists or removing any remaining butane saturated within the extract. Typically there can be up to 0.01 percent of butane saturated within the extract. To remove this the operator utilizes laboratory grade vacuum oven. This secondary process is performed in an area outside of the Closed Loop Extractor processing area. The operator places the extract onto a sheet or pan and then loads this on a shelf within the vacuum oven. Figure 38.1—Scientific Grade Vacuum Oven *sr 8 .- lid °^.... Figure 39.2—Cascadetek Vacuum Oven Control Panel With the extract loaded within the vacuum oven the operator now can choose settings according to the process. Settings include temperature (cannot exceed the equipment limit of 105 degrees F) and the pressure (cannot exceed a vacuum greater than 29 inHg). The operator may also time the process according to their manufacturing parameters. 02/24/2015 Project: 150205 IF EX4-502 Closed Loop Extractor Page 39 of 41 KD Doc. 150205ER Confidential-Proprietary Document ' ,, a ,.: , , . ,,,,, „, ,,,4 *' S " ,,. Similar to baking a cake, the pan and extract may be hot and are allowed to cool prior to removing from the vacuum oven. The reason for using the vacuum oven is to vaporize the reLldual 0.01%butane that may be present within the extract. Butane has a vaporization pressure of 30 psi which decreases with reduced pressure and increased temperarire. The utilization )f the vacuum oven forces any saturated residual butane to move to the g:.s phase and be rerr oved. The level of butane that may be within the extract at this time is negiigble from a Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) standpoint. There is no risk of butane combustion when the extract is placed in the vacuum oven. The vacuum oven itself is a standard device used in biological acid pharmaceutical laboratories similar to those found at the University or Washington. This concludes the process for using a Closed Loop Extractor, 02/24/2015 Project: 150205 IF EX4-502 Closed Loop Extractor Page 40 of 41 KD Doc. 150205ER Confidential-Proprietary Document -,44; V;Ay xt4 ava After ctto,., accord:,ng to the pr'ocess the :1: • ',Ile temperature.
