HomeMy WebLinkAbout090820_ra02JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS REGULAR AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners Philip Morley, County Administrator FROM: Mark McCauley, Central Services Director DATE: September 8, 2020 SUBJECT: Presentation to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) regarding the County's sustainable forestry program and the 2020 tree harvest plan STATEMENT OF ISSUE: On January 22, 2019 the Board of County Commissioners approved a professional services contract with Chickadee Forestry to conduct a forestry feasibility study using county owed forested parcels. The feasibility study showed that the county could create a sustainable forestry program that would simultaneously improve the health of existing forest stands while creating a sustainable revenue stream for the county. Subsequently, on February 3, 2020 the BOCC approved a professional services contract with Chickadee Forestry to develop a sustainable forestry plan. ANALYSIS: Malloree Weinheimer, Chickadee Forestry's principal, has developed a sustainable forestry plan with input from the Forestry Advisory Committee she created with a variety of experienced forestry professionals and the Jefferson County Parks Advisory Board. The program will achieve the objectives desired by the county, which are: • Restore and maintain forest health • Protect and enhance soil and water quality and fish and wildlife habitat • Protect and enhance the recreational and aesthetic value of county forest lands • Provide safe, reasonable and appropriate access to county forested lands • Provide sustainable natural resources to the local community This presentation will allow Ms. Weinheimer to explain the program to the BOCC and the general public prior to its execution.
