SUMMARY
This position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating a custodial
maintenance program for assigned buildings and may include grounds maintenance work by
performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
Consults with administrative personnel for the purpose of planning, prioritizing and scheduling
custodial activities and achieving site maintenance objectives.
Delivers a variety of items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of
distributing materials to the appropriate parties within site.
Distributes custodial supplies and equipment for the purpose of disseminating materials to
custodial staff and/or storage locations.
Inspects facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations,
maintained in an attractive and clean condition, identifying necessary repairs to facilities and/or
equipment,etc.
Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops,etc.)
for the purpose of ensuring the availability of custodial items required to properly maintain
facilities.
Monitors activities in and around work areas (e.g. halls, conference rooms, break rooms,
restrooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety.
Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or
gathering information required to perform job functions.
Performs minor job-related maintenance on custodial equipment for the purpose of ensuring
proper functioning and usability of items.

Performs groundskeeping functions (e.g. weeding, mowing, edging, applying
herbicides/pesticides, pruning,etc.) for the purpose of maintaining grounds in a safe and attractive
manner.
Prepares site for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkway, etc.) for
the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and hazard free.
Prepares written materials (e.g. supply requisitions, safety inspections, work orders, inventory
records, time sheets, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or relating activities to
administration for action.
Replenishes rest room supplies (e.g. paper towels, soap, etc.)for the purpose of ensuring adequate
quantities for daily use.
Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism,
alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for
resolution.
Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) for the purpose ofminimizing
property damage, equipment loss and/or potential liability.
Trains assigned personnel for the purpose of developing professional trade and safety awareness
skills.
Transports a variety of tools, equipment, supplies, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability
of materials required at job site.
Maintains accurate program records pertaining to participation,finances,supply inventory,
accidents and staff evaluations of program and facility effectiveness.
Assigns staff work schedules, monitors timekeeping, explains goals and objectives, conducts and
creates training opportunities,evaluates employee job performance, and conducts regular staff
meetings. Introduces new program activities, equipment, and materials to staff.
Wet and dry mop floors; vacuums, strips, washes and buffs floors; operates power cleaning equipment,
mechanical cleaners and polishers; and mixes cleaning solutions as directed.
Vacuums, spot cleans and shampoos carpets; empties and cleans waste receptacles; dusts, waxes,
washes and polishes furniture, counters, woodwork and metalwork.
Cleans and washes windows, walls, windowsills and screens as assigned. Cleans restrooms and
replenishes supplies.
Stays abreast of current trends, issues, practices, etc. in the custodial maintenance field, including
development of new practices that improve economies of facility custodial maintenance.
Accountable for specific project steps in a team-based environment.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma/GED and four(4)years experience in custodial maintenance, or related
field; and(3)three years supervisory experience in custodial maintenance supervising 3 or
more employees; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and
interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished
in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of personal computer
operation and the use of e-mail and typical office software such as Access database software;
Internet software; Excel spreadsheet software and Word processing software.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to successfully complete annual training in handling blood borne pathogens. Ability to
successfully complete annual training as assigned.
Knowledge of the Jefferson County Exposure Control Plan.
Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and equipment used in custodial work including brooms, wet
mops, dust mops, vacuums, scouring devices and wax applicators.
Knowledge of standard cleaning materials such as soaps, powders, waxes and polishes.

Ability to maintain a high standard for accuracy, completeness, and efficiency in carrying out work

Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and obtain certificates necessary for
functional skills performance, maintenance, and improvement.
Ability to work shift work as required.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with the public,peers, subordinates, and supervisors.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Washington State Drivers license.
First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
