ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Inspects residential,commercial, industrial,and other buildings during construction to ensure that compliance with the Building Code and other applicable requirements, laws,approved plans, specifications,and standards. Assists and advises the general public in matters relating to construction and Code requirements. Investigates complaints and makes inspections of existing buildings to determine if hazardous conditions exist relating to structures and their use. Keeps inspection records and prepares written reports, issues notices to correct code violations, issues "Stop Work" notices. Performs various office procedures and duties. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or GED and four(4)years' experience in building inspection, or inspection related activities and/or training, or equivalent combination of experience and education. Work experience in construction industry desirable. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read,analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports,business correspondence,and procedure manuals.Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers,clients,customers, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.Ability to apply concepts such as fractions,percentages,ratios,and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written,oral, diagram, or schedule form. Jefferson County Job Description: Building Inspector I Page 3 of 4 COMPUTER SKILLS To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of database software; MS Windows and Internet software;MS Excel spreadsheet software and MS Word word processing software. CERTIFICATES,LICENSES,REGISTRATIONS Valid Washington State Driver's License ICC Building Inspector Certificate is required within six months of employment. OR at least one of the following: ICC Plans Examiner Certificate ICC Plumbing Certificate ICC Mechanical Certificate OTHER KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications. Must have ability to use tact diplomacy,discretion and courtesy in dealing with citizens and property owners who can be uncooperative or hostile regarding enforcement of regulations. Maintain a high standard for accuracy,completeness,and efficiency in the preparation of reports. Needs ability to quickly grasp new techniques,remain calm in stressful situations,and relate to various personality styles in a calm,professional manner. Must understand the need for maintainingconfidentialityof sensitive information. Is independent and self-motivated to complete required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks. The most senior level position in this career ladder is a Building Inspector II. Advancement from Building Inspector Ito Building Inspector II requires meeting the requirements for Building Inspector II and a positive recommendation from the Department Director.
