ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIDILITIES: Patrols assigned area to enforce laws; prevent, discover and investigate crimes; and maintain order. Ensures the security of business establishments and residences. Locates persons for questioning or arrest as needed,and serves civil papers, summons,and court orders. Responds to traffic accidents,conducts investigations for cases, issues citations, conducts radar checks, and ensures a smooth maintenance of traffic flow. Drives vehicle through assigned area, observing traffic violations and issuing citations. Answers radio-dispatched or citizens'requests for law enforcement services at the scene of accidents, domestic disputes, law violations, and peace disturbances. Issues misdemeanor or infractions citations for minor offenses. Attempts to resolve domestic quarrels and situations of potential or actual violence. Investigates felonies through interviews and questioning victims,witnesses,and suspects. Conducts crime scene investigation for major crimes: inspects and photographs crime scenes, ensures evidence is gathered,preserved properly,transferred to the crime lab for analysis as needed, and available at court hearings. Secures search and arrest warrants as needed. Arrests suspects when probable cause exists, searches prisoners for weapons or contraband. Testifies in court to present evidence by describing conditions, situations, and actions. Operates radio communication and computer equipment to obtain, disseminate, and report information. Searches and assists in locating missing persons or bodies. Attends community meetings to discuss crime prevention activities and crime problems, as directed. Writes detailed incident, investigation, shift activity, violations, investigation and other reports and submits appropriate reports to the Prosecutor when charges are to be filed. Informs Sheriff of problems and progress in case of investigations. Jefferson County Job Description: Deputy Sheriff Page 2 of 4 Attends training classes and seminars to keep abreast of current criminal law and procedures. Assists other law enforcement departments and agencies with the investigation of major crimes,provides extra help with jail functions and transport of prisoners,and performs related duties as assigned. Serves as a liaison between Sheriff and Sheriffs Reserves to keep the Sheriffs Reserves abreast of current laws and procedures, provide training, answer questions, and respond to problems or requests. Trains new employees to properly use firearms in a safe and effective manner and in compliance with State laws pertaining to their usage. Inventories new and surplus property and prepares the annual inventory reports. Other duties and tasks as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree(GED); Must be 21 years of age and be a U.S. Citizen. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules,operating and maintenance instructions,and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Explorer Internet software; MS Excel spreadsheet software and MS WORD Processing software. CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS: Valid Washington State Driver's License with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations; and ability to maintain a valid license. Must successfully complete State Law Enforcement Training Academy within one(1)year of hire. Must pass a thorough background investigation which includes beingfingerprinted. g �' g Must be qualified by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department in the use of firearms. OTHER KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and obtain certificates necessary for functional skills performance,maintenance and improvement. Knowledge of law enforcement policies and procedures. Knowledge of crime scene investigation techniques, and applicable laws and regulations. Ability to conduct complex investigations involving the collection and analysis of evidence. Ability to work under stress and in dangerous conditions. Ability to be observant,able to evaluate situations,make instantaneous decisions,and react quickly with appropriate action. Outdoor work may include standing for long periods of time,walking,running jumping or physical exertion in hot weather,rain, snow, ice or other slippery conditions This assignment requires the incumbent to work a rotating shift day, swing and graveyard.
