Position: Chief Criminal Deputy FLSA: Exempt—Admin.
Department: Sheriffs Office Union: Exempt
Annual Hours: 2080 Civil Service: Exempt—Appointed
Exempt Salary Grade: MGR20 Location: Sheriff's Office

1.0 MAJOR FUNCTION AND PURPOSE J
1.1 Supervises and coordinates law enforcement activities of the patrol and criminal division
of Sheriffs Office by performing the following duties.
2.0 SUPERVISION RECEIVED
2.1 Persons in this position are given complete discretion, within the scope of policy and
regulation, as established by the State,the County, and the Sheriffs Office in the
performance of their duties. Policy direction is received from the Undersheriff and the
Sheriff.
3.0 SUPERVISION EXERCISED
3.1 This employee provides supervision of Operations Sergeants, Deputies and other Sheriffs
Office employees as directed by competent authority. This Employee will work
independently under the general supervision of the Undersheriff.
3.2 Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and
applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees;
planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and
disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
4.0 SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duties include but are not limited to
the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Sheriff or Undersheriff.
4.1 Responsible for the supervision of all Operations Sergeants and Deputy Sheriffs and
other Sheriffs Office employees as directed. Carry out varied administrative functions,
which will include, evaluations of assigned employees, writing operational directives,
shift schedules and other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or Undersheriff.
4.2 Ensure efficient operation of the Operations Department.
4.3 Ensure that all reports and other material submitted by subordinates are correct,
completed in accordance with Department policies and procedures, and properly routed.
Ensure that subordinate personnel receive proper and adequate direction, training, and
instruction.
4.4 Ensure that Department policies and procedures are adhered to by subordinate personnel.

4.5 Inspects uniform appearance of Officers and check patrol vehicles for conformity to
standards.
4.6 Perform all of the duties of a Deputy Sheriff including but not limited to: making arrests,
testifying in Court, and serving civil processes and warrants.0
4.7 Responsible for the scheduling of Patrol shifts, Range qualifications, Traffic and Marine
Patrol functions, and the Sheriffs Cadet and Reserve Officer programs.
4.8 Assist other agencies in emergencies or as directed.
4.9 Speaks before civic groups on law enforcement topics.
5.0 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES To perform this job
successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The

5.1 Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.
Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to
write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to
make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex
topics to Courts.
5.2 Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and
statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and
proportions to practical situations.
5.3 Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide
range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism
(formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.
Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
6.0 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
6.1 High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of five (5) years as a municipal law
enforcement officer with progressively responsible experience including one (1) year in a
supervisory position and at least one (1) year as a Jefferson County Sheriffs Deputy; or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
6.2 Have upon employment and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License.
6.3 Qualified, by the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department, in the use of firearms.

6.4 Qualified as a fully commissioned law enforcement officer. Must have successfully
completed the Washington State Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Basic Academy. A
Reserve Academy Certificate is acceptable but will require a Washington State Criminal
Justice Commission Administrative Waiver. (An employee with an Administrative
Waiver will not engage in patrol or general law enforcement activity on a usual basis, but
shall limit such involvement to that required for supervision, agency management, or
manpower replacement on an emergency or exigent basis.)
6.5 Required to carry a pager.
7.0 DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
7.1 Ability to use a typewriter, personal computer and software, computer terminal,
calculator, and other office equipment standard to areas of assignment and to adapt to
new and/or modified equipment which may be acquired.
7.2 Ability to develop and retain skill in the use and care of a variety of firearms and
equipment used in the operation of a law enforcement agency.
7.3 Demonstrated successful supervisory and managerial experience. Implement and
maintain sound organizational practices. Knowledge of principles and practices of
supervision.
7.4 Ability to understand unorganized facts and to order them in an understandable,
organized manner.
7.5 Ability to remain calm and organized in stressful situations or when dealing with people
experiencing stressful situations
7.6 Ability to explain reasons for events or actions/non-actions to unreceptive or emotionally
involved listeners and to maintain the prestige and integrity of the office.
7.7 Ability to make decisions that will affect the lives and property of individuals.
7.8 Ability to work in a self-managed work environment.
7.9 Ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in events, remain calm
in stressful situations, and relate to various personality styles in a calm, professional
manner.
7.10 Understands the need for maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
7.11 Ability to assure the efficient and effective utilization of volunteers and department
personnel, funds, materials, facilities and time.
7.12 Ability to deal with mentally and emotionally disturbed persons and deescalate a volatile

situation bymeans of conversation and negotiations.

7.13 Knowledge of County geography, locations and location names.
7.14 Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, to recognize actual and potential
danger, and to determine proper course of action.
7.15 Ability to observe and remember details.
7.16 Knowledge of field operations, investigative procedures, and corrections procedures in
the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office.
8.0 WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands described here are representative of

8.1 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk
or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or
feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to walk and reach
with hands and arms.
8.2 Must be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions. Work includes both
indoor and outdoor conditions in both light and dark conditions. Outdoors work may
include standing for long periods of walking, running,jumping or physical exertions in
hot weather, rain, snow, ice or other slippery conditions. Outdoor work may also include
walking, running or jumping in mountainous terrain, in water and on uneven surfaces.
Indoor work may include standing or sitting for extended periods. It may also include
climbing and jumping. Indoor work includes work in offices, as well as residences,
businesses, warehouses and other indoor conditions.
8.3 The noise level in the work environment has moderate noise.
