HomeMy WebLinkAboutCorrections Services Cook - Weekend Jefferson County Job Description Job Title: Corrections Services Cook-Weekend Department: Sheriff's Office, Corrections Division Reports To: Superintendent of Corrections Union: No Salary Level: DOQ Location: Jefferson County Correctional Center Approved By: Human Resources Manager >--L._.._,:": L Approved date: April 14,2014 Summary: This is a weekend position working Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30am until 5:00pm,preparing the lunch and dinner meals for inmates at the Jefferson County Corrections Center(Jail). This is a"Clerk Hire"position and is strictly limited to no more than 69 hours in a month. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Follow the menu established by the Food Services Supervisor, determine the types, quantity, and quality of food to be prepared. • Test food for doneness and flavor and make necessary adjustments. • Prepare food by washing, trimming, cooking, and seasoning. • Confer with the Food Services Supervisor or Superintendent of Corrections regarding any modifications to food preparation menu regarding special dietary needs of specific inmates. • Maintain a safe and sanitary food service environment. Identify the presence of things causing food deterioration and take preventative action. • Direct activities of one or more inmate workers assigned to assist in preparing and serving meals and cleanup afterwards. • Other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two (2) years related experience and/or training in large quantity food preparation; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills: Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates,Licenses, and Registrations: Valid Washington State Driver's License, current Food Handler's Permit from the Jefferson County Health Department. Other Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the practices involved with large volume food preparation. Knowledge of foods and food preparation methods including the temperatures which provide the best utilizations and yield of food items. Jefferson County Job Description: Weekend Cook Page 3 of 3 Ability to sequence or space cooking of foods so that their nutritional quality, flavor, and appearance are preserved and ready at the right time. Knowledge of requisitioning and storing food and supplies, general kitchen supervision and the practices involved in sanitation and safety in food handling. Ability to work in a locked down correctional facility with one or two inmate workers to assist in preparation, service and clean-up. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment; The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job,the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work environment is secure lockdown correctional facility and the employee will frequently be in the presence of pre-screened inmates serving their sentence. These "inmate workers" assist in food prep, delivery and clean-up. Career Ladder: This position is not a part of a career ladder.
