I visted the site as requested by Kellie Merritt of Rain Shadow Woodworks to meet with her, Kevin Coker,
Basri Basri, Seb Eggert, and the concrete contractor about potential design changes, and to observe the
conditions of the foundation excavation.
Due to frost depth, height restriction, and site grades, the proposed building footprint was excavated to a
depth of up to 3±ft adjacent to the rockery along the northeast property line. The near‐vertical cut did not
show signs of movement. The rockery and slope above did not show signs of obvious recent movement. I
suggested the possibility of survey monitoring of the slope periodically throughout construction to verify
no slope movement associated with construction.
Excavated materials appeared to include sod, topsoil, and fine‐grained soil to a depth of roughly 1.5‐2±feet
below the existing ground surface. Below such depth, medium dense to dense sand and gravel was
exposed, including the majority of the bottom of the excavation. Near the west corner of the excavation,
where the bottom of the excavation was about 1.5 feet or less, some fine‐grained material and grass roots
remained exposed. Based on the deeper than expected foundation depth, particularly along the northeast
side at the toe of the rockery, all agreed to change the current design to a wider footing and taller stem
wall.
We will return to the site as requested for pipe pile installation observation, slope observation, verification
of foundation soil bearing, and subsurface drainage installation.

I visted the site as requested by Kellie Merritt of Rain Shadow Woodworks to observe pipe pile installation
by Basri Basri and to observe the conditions of the foundation excavation.
All 22 steel galvanized 2‐inch schedule 80 pipe piles were installed today with 140‐lb pneumatic rhino
hammers and met the refusal criteria of 3 cycles of less than 1‐inch penetration for 60 seconds of
continuous driving. Please see the pile plan below with corresponding pile numbers and depths.
I observed no apparent changes in the excavation slope, rockery slope, adjacent property above the
rockery, or the bluff slope to the northwest. The contractor previously covered the excavation slope below
the rockery with plastic sheeting to prevent the soils from drying and potentially raveling into the
excavation. The contractor set up 9 survey points on the rockery face, measuring the optical distance
before and after pile driving, and found no changes in the points outside of the likely margin for error
(largest change was 1/8").
I will return to the site as requested for slope observation, verification of foundation soil bearing, and
subsurface drainage installation.
