The first I heard about this proposal was this morning June 9, 2021. I am not apposed to a
homeless camp but there has to be some prior planning and public notice prior to any action that
takes place on an issue like a proposed homeless camp in a rural area.
Some of the issues that need to be addressed are as follows:
1. There is no infrastructure to access the property, No roads not even a gravel assess road for
EMS to enter the property.
2. No Sanitation facilities such as toilets or a way to service the facilities.
3. No potable water
4. No garbage disposal areas or dumpsters
5. No county buss areas or waiting areas for the public or campers to access.
If this is going to be a Jefferson County project you need paid staff to manage the area to keep it
safe and orderly. You can not just burden the sheriffs department to manage the property and
possible violations that may occur.
Public Comment Period: I believe that a 30-45 day public comment period should be set up to
allow county residents the opportunity to respond to this proposal.
In closing I believe that the proposal for a homeless camp adjacent to Cape George Road has not
been thought out or planned thoroughly by the housing task force or the county commissioners.
The present encampment at the fairgrounds at least has the basic facilities and infrastructure to
handle the clientele of homeless. It is also close to Port Townsend so the clientele can access the
town and its facilities as well as health care if needed.
It is just wrong to just drop a homeless camp in the middle of a clear cut as an encampment with
out any infrastructure or facilities.
