HomeMy WebLinkAbout196As noted in my previous e-mail (9/20/2017), our field visit to the Pleasant Harbor MPR site on Black Point will be on October 19, 2017. Starting time is 9:00 AM. We should be finished by 12:00, but I advise you to bring your lunch in case the meeting runs late. We’ll meet at the Pleasant Harbor Marina Store and Restaurant. To get there, go through the main entrance to the marina and follow the driveway downhill. There is parking space just past the restaurant. For those of you who haven’t been there before, the main entrance is on the east side of U.S. 101 about 1.3 miles north of the Duckabush River bridge. The purpose of the field visit is to assess and discuss the risks of conflicts between the Duckabush elk herd and the development— particularly the golf course and landscaping—and how to reduce the risks. This will include spending some time on the development site and also visiting some key points in the home range of the Duckabush elk herd. We’ll start off with an overview of the Pleasant Harbor project, to familiarize everyone with the topography, current habitat, the layout of the golf course and residential/commercial areas. We’ll talk about vegetation management on the proposed golf course, how the project will change the habitat, and the risks of conflicts with wildlife, particularly elk. We’ll take a brief tour of the property during which we can discuss the range of options for addressing conflicts—e.g. hazing, fencing, and off-site habitat enhancement to divert elk away from the development. We’ll take some time to drive up the Duckabush Valley and talk about the current state of the habitat in the range of the Duckabush elk herd, and about possible opportunities to do habitat enhancements. We might even see the elk. We’ll be outside most of the morning, so dress for the weather. So, we’ll see you at 9:00 AM on October 19th at the Pleasant Harbor Marina store and restaurant.
