HomeMy WebLinkAboutPublic Health Nurse I JEFFERSON COUNTY Job Description Job Title: Public Health Nurse I Department: Public Health Division: Nursing Reports to: Director of Nursing FLSA Exempt(Y/N): No Union: UFCW BBP: Potential Exposure HIPAA: Level I Salary Level: Grade 33 Location: Public Health Office Approved By: Human Resources Manager Approved Date: July 2021 SUMMARY Provides Public Health Nursing services to individuals, groups, and families in health education and disease prevention in community health agency by performing the following duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties maybe g assigned. Organizes and conducts clinics as assigned. May direct and instruct other Public Health Nursing staff. Educates and instructs individuals and groups of all ages in health promotion activities, including but not limited to immunization, family planning, communicable diseases,hygiene, sexually transmitted disease, tuberculosis, perinatal care of mother and newborns. Participates on an interdisciplinary team on behalf of patients. Refers patients to other appropriate community agencies and facilitates the linkage process. Teaches volunteers school screening activities, performs re-screening of vision, color vision,hearing and scoliosis and referrals as necessary, acts as a resource person to school staff. Performs case finding activities for communicable diseases or health conditions with appropriate follow- up treatment. Provides case management. Provides information and referral for the staff to community resources. Documents home visits and all patient related activities on appropriate forms and provides related statistical data to the Director of Nursing. Keeps confidential patient records, statistical records and CVR data. Responsible for continuing education via workshops, current literature and resources in order to act as a community resource. Attends conferences, professional seminars and regular staff meetings as required for professional development. Assists in coordinating and evaluating nursing programs as assigned. Carries out other Health Department activities as requested or essential to program/community functioning. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Public Health Nursing Certification from an NLN accredited program and/or a Bachelor's degree (B.A.)from four-year college or university. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, general business language,technical procedures,and governmental regulations. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers,regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, clients, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions,percentages, and ratios. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. COMPUTER SKILLS To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ACCESS Database software; EXPLORER Internet software; EXCEL Spreadsheet software and WORD Word Processing software. OTHER KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to establish rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles in a non judgmental and professional manner, including knowledge and ability to discuss explicit sexual behaviors and drug use practices. Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with staff, community physicians and a variety of groups and agencies. Jefferson County Job Description: Public Health Nurse I Page 4 of 4 CERTIFICATES,LICENSES,REGISTRATIONS Current Washington State Registered Nurse(RN) license in good standing and maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout employment. Current BLS-CPR for Healthcare Providers. Valid Washington State Driver's License. Advancement from Public Health Nurse Ito a Public Health Nurse II within the career ladder requires meeting the requirements for Public Health Nurse II and a positive recommendation from the Department Director.
