SUMMARY: Performs field inspections to determine Environmental Health Code compliance by
locating and resolving cases which involve enforcement of County and State public health
codes.Attempts to achieve compliance through communications with the complainant, analyzing and
interpreting the applicable code, and coordinating investigations with the appropriate field person,
determining the appropriate enforcement action and pursuing legal remedies through obtaining
evidence, photos, and information that may be presented in court by performing the following
duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned:
Receives and investigates complaints of alleged violations of County codes and ordinances using
discretion in the method of enforcement.
Coordinates with other field staff for follow-up inspections to assure compliance of violations notices
and stop work orders.
Researches records and other information.
Prepares reports of inspections, investigations and other pertinent work performed.
Recommends and coordinates appropriate actions to be taken.
Issues stop work orders when necessary, monitors compliance, and writes letters to individuals when
necessary regarding compliance or infraction and remedies.
Gathers evidence and photos in an appropriate manner to allow presentation in court if necessary.
Confers with other County staff and legal counsel to verify code violations.
Participates in the review and development of amendments to County codes.
Assists the public by phone, in writing and in the office with code compliance questions, application
forms and general understanding of requirements.
Provides back -up to other staff as needed, including the staff that do field inspections.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in
law enforcement, paralegal, or similar discipline and four (4) years related field
experience in code enforcement, including direct contact with the public in an
inspection or enforcement area, building, planning, or environmental sanitation,
paralegal, criminal justice;
OR
BA in a criminal justice, law enforcement or law related field, and two (2) years related
field experience in code enforcement, including direct contact with the public in an
inspection or enforcement area, building, planning, or environmental sanitation,
paralegal, criminal justice; and or training;
OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional
journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations and legal property
descriptions. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of
managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions,
proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of
basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of
instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge ofMS Access
Database software; MS Explorer Internet software; PERMIT PLAN Project
Management software; MS Excel Spreadsheet software and MS Word Word Processing
software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Washington State Driver's License
Inspector Certification or equivalent from the Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation is
desirable
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of County codes, ordinances and regulations relating to environmental health enforcement
and principles; principles, methods and techniques relating to enforcement activities; conflict
resolution methods, and legal proceedings, governmental regulations, policies and procedures.
Ability to handle and resolve stressful situation in a professional manner, demonstrating tact, patience,
and courtesy.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff~ other agencies and the
general public.
Ability to recognize, evaluate and properly resolve unique problems or situations requiring the
exercise of good judgement.
Ability to work independently.
Must have good organizational skills, public speaking skills, and the ability to participate in hearing in
a clear and comprehensive manner in front of a group of citizens.
Ability to perform field inspections when required.
