May work on the entire inventory of County vehicles and equipment, including both gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines, by performing the following duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned. Repairs and/or rebuilds of engines, transmissions, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Is required to drive vehicles and operate heavy equipment. Researches complex problems and provides other mechanics with options for difficult Maintenance issues. Identifies best maintenance practices for fleet maintenance. Assesses the in-house versus contracted costs for various maintenance projects. Performs routine maintenance and/or servicing in the shop, including diagnosis, tune-ups, tire repairs, and related items. Performs routine maintenance and/or servicing in the field, including preventative maintenance, repairs, and related items. Performs welding and fabricating; services and/or repairs small power tools. Performs shop maintenance and cleaning as required. Updates services records as required. Provides technical support and direction to other staff as appropriate. May be required to determine project priority when emergency repairs are needed. Jefferson County Job Description: Central Services - Mechanic III Lead Page 2 of 4 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities, but is a "lead" position in the division of assignment. Lead responsibilities include assisting the Supervisor with interviewing, training, planning, assigning, accounting for attendance, oversight of the off -hours emergency calls, and directing work. Lead positions also provide input for appraising performance and assist in addressing complaints and resolving problems. The work is highly confidential. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High School diploma or GED plus seven (7) years' experience in mechanical work on at least two (2) of the skill families - auto, heavy equipment, over the road truck, welding and fabricating; or two (2) years of mechanical work experience in two of the skills families listed and five (5) years combined experience in County Mechanic I and/or II positions; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as ordinances, safety rules, equipment manuals, maintenance manuals, parts catalogs, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to groups regarding equipment maintenance projects. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and, divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute and use rates, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations; ability to prepare and interpret graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. COMPUTER -SKILLS To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Access database software; Explorer internet software; Outlook e-mail software; MS Excel spreadsheet software and MS Word processing software. OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Ability to perform duties with significant discretion and little supervision or technical assistance. Ability to comply with all County and departmental safety policies and procedures. Ability to develop and maintain current technical skills. Experience performing regular maintenance activities; master level of knowledge in at least one field and journeyman level knowledge in all other areas of mechanical equipment repair. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid Washington State Driver's license. Must obtain a commercial endorsement (CDL) within six (6) months of employment.
