ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Assists, coordinates, and evaluates substance abuse prevention and related programs as assigned. Organizes and conducts training as assigned. Educates and instructs individuals and groups of all ages in health promotion activities, including but not limited to tobacco, alcohol, other drugs and related behaviors. Develops rapport and working relationships with diverse aspects of community. Participates on an interdisciplinary prevention team. Refers consumers to other appropriate community agencies and facilitates the linkage process. Acts as a resource person to schools agencies, community groups, and Jefferson County Health and Human Services staff. Provides information and referral for consumers to community resources and to Jefferson County Health & Human Services. Keeps confidential patient records, and statistical records. Responsible for continuing education via workshops, current literature and resources in order to act as a community resource. Orients new employees and performs other tasks and projects as assigned. Recruits and supervises volunteers. Seeks out funding sources. Monitor and write quality assurance reports, substance abuse prevention grants and others as assigned. This position may direct and instruct other staff. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A.) from four-year college or university in Human Services or equivalent field; and two (2) years related experience and/or training in child/adolescent learning and development; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. MA THEMA TICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ACCESS Database software; EXPLORER Internet software; EXCEL Spreadsheet software and WORD Word Processing software. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Must possess full working knowledge of substance abuse prevention principles and practices in a wide diversity of work situations. Ability to work in conjunction with the Jefferson County Health and Human Services prevention team and local treatment agencies. Enhanced knowledge of prevention needs in recurrent, complex and difficult situations according to program purposes and guidelines. Ability to provide services based on community needs data. Ability to function with minimal supervision and to exercise independent judgment. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to establish rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles in a non-judgmental and professional manner, including knowledge and ability to discuss substance abuse prevention theories and practices, explicit sexual behaviors, drug use practices, and other problem behaviors. Ability to organize, set priorities, and coordinate activities. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Ability to work with diverse community groups. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients and the general public. ability to communicate and work cooperatively with staff from Health Department, schools treatment agency, mental health agencies, and community-based groups. Ability to maintain a sense of humor. Ability to be available on a flexible schedule as job demands and to attend some overnight trainings, and weekend and evening activities.
