In the Matter of Modifying Resolution No. 43-98 }
Establishing a Salary Schedule for the Elected }
Offices of Assessor, Auditor, Clerk, Treasurer, }
Commissioner, Sheriff, and Prosecuting Attorney }
RESOLUTION NO. 17-02
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioner sets the salaries of Elected Officials
and salaries of future members of the Board of Commissioners; and,
WHEREAS, Jefferson County has adopted a compensation system for elective offices
with the passage of Resolution No. 43-98; and,
WHEREAS, the Office of the State Auditor has determined that setting the Board of
Commissioners salary to any escalating index may be unconstitutional; and
WHEREAS, the Washington State Constitution prohibits the Board of Commissioners
from lowering the actual compensation for any elected office during the term of the office holder.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOL VED, by the Board of Commissioners that the
annual salary for the elected Assessor, Auditor, Clerk, Treasurer, Commissioners, Sheriff and
Prosecuting Attorney shall remain as provided in Attachment A of Resolution 43-98, however, said
salary schedule shall not be adjusted annually except as provided herein; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOL VED, that the Board of Commissioners may, at their
discretion, annually adjust the compensation matrix (Attachment A) for all elected offices except for
the office of County Commissioner; provided, that any such adjustment shall be set by resolution of the
Board of Commissioners as part of the Board's action in adopting the annual County budget.
