HomeMy WebLinkAbout20191126_PT ETC Meeting MinutesPort Townsend Empowered Teens Coalition Meeting Minutes November 26th 2019 3:30-4:30pm Blue Heron Middle School room 409 Purpose of meeting: Updates on activities, Discuss results from CAT Facilitator for this meeting: Lindsay Scalf Attendees: Tasha Newcomb, Al Scalf, Lo Lo Sherwood, Tessie Ottaway-Chung, Denise Banker Time Activity 3:30 Call meeting to order 3:35 Updates on activities Survey collection and updates on total number of surveys  143 collected to date. 180 is the end goal for Port Townsend Prevention in Jefferson County presentation at Science and Sips lecture series  Lecture series for Washington State Science Teachers Association. 7 people in attendance. Presented on prevention science, and coalition activities. General feedback- many parents think the only way to prevent drug and alcohol use is to keep kids super busy. We need to emphasize that adolescent substance use is a complex challenge and the risk/protective factor framework shows there are many ways to intervene, both by promoting protective factors and reducing risk factors. Positive social norms campaign in PT could help with this. Drug Take Back Day 2019  Port Townsend Drug Take Back collected 100 lbs of prescription and other drugs. Collaboration with PTPD, Officer Jeremy Vergin was the officer present for the take back at Safeway. Distributing ‘no vaping’ signs to local businesses  Denise, Karen, Lindsay went around to local businesses with signage and information for local businesses regarding the Jefferson County ordinance which includes vaping in the no smoking in public places ordinance. Prevention Summit November 4-6  Denise and Lindsay attended a three day conference in Yakima and learned about WA state prevention education updates. Hopefully next year Tasha and potentially some members of the prevention club will join, we will include funding for this in the next fiscal year’s action plan. Rainbow Center meetings  Teen center for LGBTQ youth and their allies. Opening January 6. Will be open from 4-8pm each Monday, open to 12-17 year olds from 4-6pm, and to 18-24 year olds from 6-8pm Naloxone Presentation to PT School Board  PTHS Principal Carrie Ehrhardt, Denise, and Lindsay presented to the School Board about the benefits of having Naloxone (opioid antagonist- can reverse opioid overdose) available in all public places. School Board taking next steps- to draft a policy and train staff on administering naloxone. Updates from Coalition members Tasha Newcomb- Student Assistance Professional at Blue Heron Middle School  Delivered drug education ‘Prevention Education’ curriculum to all 7th graders at Blue Heron  Delivering ‘Teen Intervene’ to students who have been identified as using or at risk of using substances  Hosting an ‘Affected Others’ group with 7 participants currently  Started up a Prevention Club with 26 members- have organized Red Ribbon Week activities, and planning a pledge for the Holidays encouraging students to stay ‘Substance Free Over the Holidays’ Lo Lo Sherwood  Sunrise Rotary Interact Club planning another game night for families in PT, hosting at Salish Coast Elementary this year. Coalition will collaborate again to help with planning and chaperoning  Human Growth and Development training program for teachers of grades 5-12. Lo Lo will invite Tasha to join to share what she has been doing with prevention education Denise Banker  Guiding Good Choices in March 2020. Every Monday in Port Hadlock at the Jefferson County Library, every Tuesday in PT at Jefferson County Public Health. 4:00 Discuss results from Coalition Assessment Tool Community awareness of Coalition  Share website https://jeffersoncountypublichealth.org/1363/Empowered-Teens-Coalition---Port- Townsen Sector representation  Recruiting people from different groups, members can communicate that Feb-June are the months where we make the action plan for the following year, so if potential members want to be involved in that planning stage those are great months to attend meetings and workgroups  Denise and Lindsay will attend a PT City Council Meeting to recruit a city council member Youth participation  Will follow up at a later date to plan how to invite Prevention Club members to participate 4:30 Closed meeting Next meeting: December 17, 2019 3:30-4:30pm at Blue Heron Middle School room 409 Lindsay Scalf Pronouns: she/her Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative Coordinator Jefferson County Public Health
