Lo Lo discussed the presentation the Coalition is going to make at the Sunrise Rotary meeting on October 28th. This is a chance for the coalition to share the prevention message with local civically minded individuals. Tessie shared that in her work with DBH they are continuing to provide mental health services to youth, and COVID19 restrictions and anxieties continue to prove challenges to youth. Youth often struggle when they miss out on the recreational activities that are usually protective factors. Discussed difficulties youth experience like their fears that they are a contagion now that they are going back to school. Discussed the overwhelm that teachers experience, which impacts how many additional programs they are able to integrate into their virtual education (clubs, prevention education…) 4:00 Discussed investigating social and emotional resilience at local schools, Clallam Resilience Initiative model, and some of the recent challenges youth have been experiencing in Jefferson County Denise described her work with the Clallam Resilience Initiative, she has been working to spread the word about the NEAR sciences (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, ACEs, Resilience) through youtube videos using resilience cards. Anne described some of her work with the Guardian Ad Litem program using resilience education and strategies, focusing on the 7Cs model (confidence, competence, connection, character, contribution, coping, control) Discussed how to approach continuing the work of promoting resilience in Jefferson County. Decided to form a workgroup with PT and Chimacum coalitions to develop strategies for resilience. Denise, Lindsay, and Al will meet on Friday to discuss the newsletter and what elements of that can integrate resilience themes. 4:15 Updates on teen intern position We received the information about the amount of the additional funding award we will receive from the State Opioid Response, which amounts to about an extra $9,000 per year for the next two years. Lindsay has been in communication with the management at JCPH who are willing to support creating the position as long as all costs are covered. Discussed next steps-job description and scope of workplan. Karen, Lo Lo, Al, and Lindsay will set up another meeting to develop these materials. 4:20 Opportunity to participate in MVAPE survey/Cannabis policy development Karen described the MVAPE survey, a survey of the density of exposure to vaping products and marijuana that youth encounter. There is an opportunity to participate in this survey in the short term and submit the results to the legislature for their session regarding LCB rulemaking. Discussed rather how to integrate it into the job description for the intern to complete in the coming year. Lindsay brought up the opportunity to participate in policy development at the next meeting, to partner with YMPEP’s efforts to develop cannabis policies, and to address the environmental strategy that is part of our action plan. Coalition decided that our next meeting will be devoted to this policy development. 4:30 Close meeting Next meeting: October 27, 2020 3:30-4:30 via Zoom Lindsay Scalf Pronouns: she/her Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative Coordinator Jefferson County Public Health
