Updates
Reintroduced and welcomed Alexis, our coalition’s DBHR fellow, and Madeline, DBHR fellow
in Port Angeles.
Denise updated us on the Drug Take Back event in the QFC parking lot April 24. 143 people
came, 9 boxes total containing 300 lbs of medications! Boosted Facebook posts may have
made the difference in increased attendance.
Clerk hire for Prevention Peer- job posting is live, we have a candidate who may be able to
start in June!
Hidden in Plain Sight virtual presentation on May 11th, Lindsay will share the flyer once it is
finalized.
Vaping prevention Brinnon and Quilcene at the end of May, presentations in the PT school
district will be discussed for scheduling in the next school year.
Greg- sharps containers exist now at the fairgrounds, there is one in each bathroom.
Denise- Recovery Cafe has been open Thursday/Friday for the past month for Thursday
dinner and Friday breakfast. Support groups are happening.
LoLo is supporting tutoring at PTHS after school 2:30-4 for study support. Discussed how to
provide incentives for the youth, might use our leftover gift cards for a raffle of some kind.
Discussed how to provide prevention educational materials available. Lindsay will arrange a
packet of some of our brochures and informational materials to provide.
Tanya updated the group on the YMCA after school program restarting in Chimacum.
Lindsay summarized the past two months of Guiding Good Choices- five participants in
March and three in April. There was some interest in hosting a Strengthening Families
program which we can discuss at the action planning meeting.
Holly- Prevention education is complete for grade 7 using the Project SUCCESS curriculum.
4:00 Review of Community Survey
Reviewed data from adult perspectives of adolescent substance use survey from Fall 2020.
Generally we have similar responses to the state average in regards to questions like ‘how
much of a problem is. ____’ so this is not as much of a concern.
The discrepancies lie in questions about things like social hosting, and ‘moderate’ youth use
(moderate is in quotes because per our evidence, any youth use is problematic) Which is
addressed in GGC and NFP in our action plan.
Qualitative results
Most community members are concerned about racial injustice in some way, though there
is a large group who use circular reasoning and don’t see how it connects to our community
in Jefferson County due to the community lacking ‘diversity’. There is room to explore how
to help people understand the impact of systemic racism in a community they see as ‘less
diverse’. Policy workgroup has discussed how to address this in terms of providing
education, and has researched historically racially restrictive covenants that prevented
property ownership for BIPOC in our county. Greg recommended a show called
‘exterminate all the brutes’ as an educational tool.
Responses also show a lack of parents having specific conversations about substance use
during COVID19 lockdowns.
What do we need to do to help people talk about the increase in substance use and mental
health challenges among youth AND adults?
Discussed having a larger stakeholder group to discuss qualitative results
Action step:
Lindsay will send out the pdfs again, then we all review materials so we can look at data and
think about three ‘zingers’ (main takeaways from the content) to inform you in how you
discuss whether or not to continue certain programs (which we then vote on if discussion
diverges)
Keep thinking about how to have a larger stakeholder meeting about qualitative results
