in Jefferson County

RESOLUTION NO. 72-00
WHEREAS, the Jefferson County Public Transportation Benefit Area funds the operation,
maintenance, and capital needs required to provide public transportation in Jefferson County
through the Jefferson Transit Authority; and
WHEREAS, a ballot proposition has been placed before the voters of Jefferson County at
an election to be held on September 19, 2000 which authorizes the Authority to impose an
additional three-tenths (3/lOths) of one percent (1 %) sales and use tax on the citizens of Jefferson
County; and
WHEREAS, in November 1999, voters in the State of Washington passed 1-695 which
eliminated Motor Vehicle Excise Tax funds; and
WHEREAS, sales tax funds are the only available avenue of tax subsidy remaining to
public transportation agencies; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson Transit Authority will not be able to maintain current levels of
selVice without this increase in sales tax funds; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson Transit Authority has over its twenty-year history consistently
shown gains in ridership and selVices; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson Transit Authority has never requested an increase in the sales tax
rate in its history; and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners recognizes the importance of public
transportation in Jefferson County as a vital public selVice in order to maintain a livable
community with alternative means of transportation for all citizens and to promote the County's
economic growth; and

WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners has discussed and voted to support
Proposition #1 at a regular meeting held this date;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOL VED that the Board of County Commissioners hereby
officially endorses Proposition #1 to increase the sales tax rate within Jefferson County an
additional three-tenths of one percent for the purpose of funding continued public transportation
in Jefferson County.
