HomeMy WebLinkAbout040422as01 JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners Mark McCauley, Interim County Administrator FROM: Julie Shannon, Executive Secretary II DATE: April 4, 2022 SUBJECT: DISCUSSION AND POTENTIAL ACTION re: LETTER OF SUPPORT re: Invite the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe to Partner in a Series of Events being Produced by The New Old Time Chautauqua and the Production Alliance during the Rhododendron Festival, May 20-22, 2022 STATEMENT OF ISSUE: DISCUSSION AND POTENTIAL ACTION re: LETTER OF SUPPORT re: Invite the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe to Partner in a Series of Events being Produced by The New Old Time Chautauqua and the Production Alliance during the Rhododendron Festival, May 20-22, 2022 ANALYSIS: A request of receptivity to participate in the 40th Anniversary of the New Old Time Chautauqua on Rhody Weekend with a DRAFT Letter of Support was emailed to Commissioner Eisenhour. The Request explains this letter will be also sent to Fawn Sharp of the Quinault Nation, Timothy J. Greene Sr. of the Makah Tribe, Doug Woodruff of the Quileute Nation, Leonard Forsman of the Suquamish Tribe, Frances G. Charles of the Lower Elwah Klallam Tribe, Jeromy Sullivan of the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, Steve Edwards of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community,Nancy McDaniels of the Snohomish, and maybe others. If approved, these letters will be hand delivered with a formal letter from the New Old Time Chautauqua and The Production Alliance, additional information about the weekend events and a ceremonial gift. RECOMMENDATION: Our ask of the Commissioners is to endorse this weekend of events by approving, signing and issuing these important invitations. The County is working with NOTC and TPA to bring about a series of public events during the Rhododendron Festival and we would love to collaborate with you for the following: • Friday Evening - Opening Ceremony • Saturday- Rhododendron Festival Grand Parade; Invitation to march with Native Veteran Color Guard, Tribal Royalty, and any other ambassadors you may like to represent the tribe in the Parade • Saturday Evening -The Big Show at Fort Worden State Park- Complimentary tickets and reserved seating for all tribal members • Sunday- Workshops - Community oriented education and entertainment will be given by the New Old Time Chautauqua. We invite tribal members to host cultural, historical, and educational workshops if interested • Sunday Evening- Chautauqua Community Congress - Opportunity for local tribal leaders to share issues and opportunities facing their communities We view the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe as an essential partner in the development of cultural heritage programming to ensure tribal perspectives and stories are appropriately, accurately and authentically presented to the people of Jefferson County. We look forward to working with you, NOTC and TPA to develop Tribal partnership opportunities with Jefferson County. We are excited about the potential of working with you, your staff, and interested members of the Jamestown Tribal Community to build a stronger partnership.
