HomeMy WebLinkAbout050222as01 JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS CONSENT AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners FROM: Mark McCauley, County Administrator DATE: May 2,2022 SUBJECT: Request Board of County Commissioners approve a letter of support for Spencer Forest Products' Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities grant application STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Spencer Forest Products is applying for a Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities grant to help them produce biochar,perform soil testing, provide gardening and farming education,track the advantages of using biochar, and support looking for new opportunities to use timber waste in the regenerative economy of biochar. This grant will help build out the sawmill on the west end which will lead to additional employment and economic development. It will also help stimulate additional interest in the biochar economy. ANALYSIS: The Board of County Commissioners in the past has supported the production of biochar in our community because of its economic potential and salutary environmental benefits. RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners discuss the letter of support and agree to sign it. It stor4s carbon and builds resilience We believe the build out of the sawmill will assist in the economic development of our county. Not only in the number of people that will be employed at the sawmill, but through the employment of people through the creation and use of biochar.This is exactly the kind of innovation that can help push the forest practices industry into the climate adaptive resiliency that our future depends on.
