IN THE MATIER OF ASKING FOR
CONGRESSIONAL ACTION REGARDING
THE NORTHWEST ECONOMIC
ADJUSTMENT INITIATIVE

RESOLUTION NO. 109-97
WHEREAS, in the early 1990's Jefferson County saw its economic base thoroughly
undercut as a result of changes in Federal and State timber policies; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson County is still in need of Federal assistance to firmly
establish a new, year-round, high-wage, economic sector that can help in offsetting
the losses that occurred in our timber related businesses; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson County as well as numerous other timber impacted
communities within Washington State, believes that because of its needs,
reauthorization of the NEAl should occur for a period beyond 1998;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Jefferson County requests that
Senators Slade Gorton and Patty Murray, and Representative Norm Dicks pursue
reau thorization of the NEAl for a five year period (1999-2003).
