HomeMy WebLinkAbout104 96JEFFERSON COUNTY STATE OF WASHINGTON In the Matter of Declaring Opposition to } the Extermination of Mountain Goats } and Non-Native Fish in the } Olympic National Park } RESOLUTION NO. 104-96 }VHEREAS, The Olympic National Park has announced, as the preferred alternative, a plan to exterminate the mountain goats within the Park in order to eliminate the impacts on plant life, stating that the goats are not indigenous to the area; but were transplanted from outside the area many years ago; and, and, IgI-IEREAS., this effort may also be extended to other non-native species within the park; }VHEREAS, the mountain goats are a source of enjoyment to Jefferson County residents who have observed them while hiking, camping and touring the Park areas; and long time County residents, with up to 60 years experience in the high country, have observed minimal cumulative impacts from the goats; and, IVHE~, tourists and visitors to Jefferson County also appreciate having the opportunity to observe the mountain goats; and the tourism industry is a key economic source for the County because of the decrease in logging and the reduction in the salmon fishing season; and }VHEREAS, the extermination of the entire population of mountain goats in the Olympic National Park will be a loss to the citizens of Jefferson County and the visitors of the Park; and, WHEREAS, the management of the mountain goat population is a preferable altemative, preserving the plants from extinction and continuing the long-time residential goat herd. NOIr, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners encourages the National Park System to consider adoption of an alternative plan which would allow for management of the mountain goat population within the Olympic National Park to prevent uncontrollable impacts to the plant life within the park; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners discourages the elimination of non-native species within the Park boundaries when other management options remain available.
