Encouraging Cooperation Between Recreational and Commercial Fishing Groups and Opposing Initiative 640 WHEREAS, commercial and recreational fishing contribute to the quality of life and the economy of Jefferson County, and WHEREAS, commercial and recreational fishing are directly and indirectly responsible for the creation of hundreds of jobs for citizens of Jefferson County, and WHEREAS, fishing is an inherent part of the history and culture of Jefferson County and is valued as an important component of our local economy, and WHEREAS, a group known as "Save Our Sealife" has filed Initiative 640 with the Washington Secretary of State, which, if passed, could have the effect of severely limiting or ending commercial fishing for Chinook and Coho salmon, and limiting commercial fishing of other salmon species in Washington and in the waters off Jefferson County; and WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the citizens of Jefferson County and the recreational and commercial fishing industry to cooperate to protect and improve fishing resources for all our citizens. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of County Commissioners urges the rejection of Initiative 640 and encourages the continued cooperation of recreational and commercial fishing interests to protect and to improve our State's fisher resources for all our citizens, and BE IT FURTHER RESOL VED, the Board of County Commissioners declare their support for protecting both the recreational and commercial salmon fishing industry in Washington State waters by opposing any such change in the State law.
