Before the area became Olympic National Park in 1938 and before there were even marked trails, George would go out each summer with a group and set up a base camp to explore and photograph. He carried heavy supplies and a Goertz View camera with him as he hiked to produce large format negatives. Because they were so large, Ann Welch, his granddaughter who later inherited the negatives, had to wait 50 years for technology to catch up so the negatives could be scanned at high resolution. The photos on view are the result of Ann's efforts to restore her grandfather's precious, century-old negatives and print them through a process refined in the 1850s using a palladium solution. Ann's palladium prints of her grandfather's photographs represent a combination of techniques spanning 150 years.
