VOI~ 20 ,þ 24~ OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE CLEARINGHOUSE NOTIFICATION January 4, 1994 VOLUME 94 MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 1994 MARY E. GABOURY JmERSON COUNTY AUDITOR Initiative Measure No. 518, which was approved by the voters at the November 8, 1988 general election established a state minimum wage and further required that, prior to Januarý 1 st of each odd-numbered year, the Office of Financiai Management make recommendations to the legislature and the governor regarding its increase. The 1993 session of the Washington State legislature, acting pursuant to the provisions of the initiative, raised the minimum wage to $4.90 per hour for those persons over the age of 18 (Chapter 309, Laws of 1993). The raise became effective January 1, 1994. Those workers who are 16 and 17 years of age fall subject to the Department of labor and Industries' standards. The Department oversees wage requirements for those under the age of 18. The Department has opted to increase wages for 16 and 17 year-olds to $4.90 per hour. Teens who are under the age of 16 earn 85% of the $4.90, or $4.165, unless the employer is subject to the federal Fair Employment Standards Act. That minimum is set at $4.25 per hour. This increase has the potential to affect temporary election employees from chad checkers to precinct election officers. Please check your records and bring their wages up to the newly ascribed standard. Specifically, you may want to reference RCW 29.45.120 which requires judges and clerks of an election to be paid not less than the state minimum hourly wage.
