The BNR retreat consists of field tours in the Straits and Clallam County areas. The purpose of the retreat is to provide the Board Members a firsthand look at land management practices under the governance of DNR. This year’s retreat will focus on DNR communications site leases, recreation, old-growth protection on Day 1; and DNR forest management programs, specifically relating to the Olympic Experimental State Forest (OESF) on Day 2. You are welcome to attend the retreat in Clallam County. Here is the schedule: August 16, 2022 – 7:30am.-4:00pm – We will meet at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln Street, Port Angeles 98362 and will return at the Red Lion at the end of the day. August 17, 2022 – 7:30am-3:00pm – We will meet at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln Street, Port Angeles 98362, and make a stop in Forks to pick up additional attendees if needed. Attendees will disperse at the end of the tour. Created in 1957, the Board of Natural Resources serves many roles including providing policy governance for the sustainable management of 3 million acres of state trust land, acting as the board of appraisers for timber and land sales as outlined in the state constitution, and making decisions in the best interest of the trusts. The Commissioner of Public Lands (Hilary Franz) acts as the secretary of the board and is the current chair of the Board. Additionally, the Board consists of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (Chris Reykdal), the Governor’s representative (Jim Cahill), the incoming Dean of Washington State University’s College of Agriculture and Human & Natural Resource Sciences (Wendy Powell), and the Director of the University of Washington’s School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (Dan Brown), and a County Commissioner from a county that contains state forest lands (Bill Peach, Clallam County). Through the sale of timber and leases for agriculture production, commercial real estate, and other uses, DNR generates more than $200 million annually of tax-free revenue that supports school construction, social & health services, and local county services. DNR will provide transportation for the field tours.
