Of those 21 naming proposals, 18 are from Tribal governments in response to the United States Department of the Interior’s proposal to rename geographic features in Washington state that currently have derogatory names. The meeting will be held remotely via Zoom, starting at 10 a.m., with opportunities for public comment available. In addition, for Tribal historic preservation officers and representatives, the Council of Geographic Names Authorities (CoGNA) is hosting an interactive workshop on September 15 in Frederick, Md., to provide Tribes with information on current naming processes, an introduction to Policy X, and a roundtable discussion on developing communications between Tribes, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, and state representatives. (Tribal members wishing to attend the CoGNA conference are eligible to be reimbursed for travel and conference fees, though fees must be paid in advance. Reimbursement is on a first-come, first-served basis.)
