RESOLUTION TO DESIGNATE PRIMITIVE ROADS
WHEREAS, the Washington State Legislature has passed an Aet, (CH. 45. Laws of 1980)
creating a new classification of county roads to be designated as Primitive Roads,
and
WHEREAS, said Act provides that Primitive Road cZassification may be appZied by the
county ZegisZative authority onZy to roads, or portions of roads, which.:
Z) are not classified as part of the county primary road system
2) have a graveZ or earth driving surface
3) have an average annuaZ daiZy traffic of one hundred or fewer vehicZes,
and
WHEREAS, the county enaineer has recommended that certain roads, or portions of
roads, meeting these criteria, be designated, as Primitive Roads, and
WHEREAS, this ZegisZative authority desires to implement the designation of
Primitive Roads in accordance with the criteria estabZished by Zaw,

DESIGNATION
The primitive road legislation passed in the last Session of
the Legislature becomes effective June 1, 1980. The legisla-
tion is designed simply to permit individual county legisla-
tive authority to :identify and designate certain roads meeting
the statutory criteria as primitive roads. The legislation re-
quires that this designation be done by resolution of the local
legislative authority and that the roads so designated be so
posted in accordance with the requirements of the Manual on
Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Enclosed for your information is the following material:
1) a copy of the new law,
2) a copy of a sample resolution approved by the County
Road Administration Board for use in designating primitive
roads which will be identified as CRAB form 112 and eventually
included in Appendix A of the CRAB Standards,
3) a copy of the sign plate prepared by DOT showing the
pertinent signs.
It is suggested that those counties which already have desig-
nated roads on which there are "No 'darning Signs" go through
the process of identifying and designating these roads as
primitive roads by resolution of the Board sometime between
now and the first of the year. In those situations, the exist-
ing sign would merely need to be supplemented with primitive
road sign 17 -702 posted immediately above the existing sign.
