On Thursday, July 7, more than 250 community members joined us at Finnriver Farm & Cidery <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=24984b1176&e=49e2085cc8> for LandFest, Jefferson Land Trust’s annual fundraising gala. We were inspired and overjoyed to be back on the land with so many of our supporters to celebrate, learn, and witness the power of community-driven conservation. Together, we raised more than $240,000 to help protect and care for the places that matter in Jefferson County! It was our biggest Fest yet, with the most guests we’ve ever welcomed, 13 staff members, and about 30 volunteers who generously lent their time to the event. It was wonderful to see so many old and new friends mingling as local troubadour Samara Jade’s <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=8d2a3fb78c&e=49e2085cc8> music drifted from the big tent. <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=6840e226a0&e=49e2085cc8> Executive Director Richard Tucker presented opening remarks, followed by a blessing from Rochelle Blankenship of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cb b92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=75683ce177&e=49e2085cc8> . Emcees Luke Burbank and Matt Smith kept the crowd informed and entertained as they enjoyed a delicious farm-to-table meal served up by Chef Dan Ratigan and his team from The Fireside Restaurant at the Resort at Port Ludlow <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=6e08e53729&e=49e2085cc8> , accompanied by wine from Marrowstone Vineyards <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=faadf580b1&e=49e2085cc8> and Finnriver cider. Photo courtesy of Roxanne Hudson. When you think of working farm animals, you may picture guard and/or herding dogs, barn cats, milk cows, or maybe even ground-clearing goats. But what about geese? SpringRain Farm & Orchard <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=575c9f36d4&e=49e2085cc8> in Chimacum (which is protected by a conservation easement that owners Roxanne Hudson and John Bellow donated to the Land Trust in 2008) is an organic family farm that strives to develop a farming model that mimics a natural ecosystem. There, a gaggle of 75+ geese have been an important part of that system for the last four years. In addition to providing a seasonal supply of eggs, these talkative herbivores roam various parts of SpringRain’s 26 acres to keep the grass down in the pastures and feed on the weeds and grass that threaten berry bushes, apple and pear trees, and other crops.
