Next Phase of Restoration Project in the Upper South Fork Skokomish Watershed Forthcoming
Olympia, WA, June 27, 2022— The Olympic National Forest, in collaboration with the Skokomish Tribe and Mason Conservation District, will implement the next steps of restoration work
in the Upper South Fork Skokomish starting Monday, August 1st.

tWgqG6rhQ==> , engineered log jams will be constructed on the mainstem reaches of the upper South Fork Skokomish River and lower Church Creek. Log jams are naturally occurring accumulations
of trees and pieces of large wood in rivers and streams that alter the flow of water and provide important fish habitat.
The placement of large woody material in streams bolsters this natural process by creating complex river channels and increasing habitat for aquatic species, both in the stream channel
and floodplains.
The Upper South Fork Skokomish watershed has been identified as a high priority habitat restoration area by local, state, and federal entities. Previous surveys in these waterways identified
a lack of sufficient stable wood needed to create and maintain pools, retain, and sort sediments, and generate connectivity with the floodplain, all key components of high-quality steelhead
habitat.
Construction is anticipated to occur throughout the month of August. Noise from operations may be heard by those recreating in the area. There are no closures at this time. For public
safety, the Forest Service is asking forest visitors to use caution when driving in this area as large equipment will be at work.
